INTRODUCTION
Optic means form of light & Camouflage

means to mix with surroundings. Optical

camouflage is a technology to make any
object invisible in the presence of light.
In 2003, three professors Tachi, Inami &
Kawakami developed the first camouflage
system at the University of Tokyo (JAPAN).
Time Magazine named it as coolest invention
of the year.
Example of this system is : Harry Potters
invisibility cloak.

OPTICAL CAMOUFLAGE
SYSTEM
It mainly requires elements like Digital Camera,
Computer, Projector, Half mirror, Cloak (long jacket).
Digital camera used to capture back ground images
and send those images to computer for processing.
Computer calculates the viewing angle, distance of
viewers & based on those statistics it adjusts the
image (so that it looks real) and transmits it to a
projector.
Half mirror= 1 side transparent + other side
reflective
Projector projects that image on cloak wearer.
Cloak acts as a 3D movie screen as it made of retro
reflective material.

Retro Reflectivity

Reflectivity means bouncing back of light &

Retro-reflectivity means bouncing back of

light in the same direction (i.e., back to
source)

Real world applications

Augmented stereoscopic vision in surgery.
Cockpit floors for plane landing.
Transparent rear hatch for cars.
Windowless rooms.
Stealth technology (to make war planes

invisible).
Mutual tele-existence.

Draw backs
Large amount of hardware required like

camera, computer, projector, half mirror &

cloak.
The illusion is convincing when viewed from
certain angle.
Back ground should not be too bright as cloak
is of silver color.
