My name is Kelly Belland and I am a second year student at Lakeland College and
am currently working towards a Bachelor of Secondary Education. I am majoring in
History and minoring in Drama. I am hoping to gain a practicum placement at your
school as part of my education degree. This placement will help me to gain a better
understanding and experience in the profession I have chosen.
In the last few years I have been volunteering with a non-profit organization called
Snowflake House Respite Foundation, which has been working to help families who
have children with disabilities. Some of this volunteer work includes looking after
children with disabilities, as well as helping to coordinate a program called
Sibshops, which is for children who have siblings with disabilities. I have also
helped to plan and execute fundraisers for Snowflake House Respite Foundation and
have been a board member. I also have an autistic brother who I have helped to
care for. Over the last summer I worked as a Historical Interpreter at a Provincial
Historic Site called Victoria Settlement. As a Historical Interpreter I helped to plan
special events as well as educational programs, gave tours, and did day-to-day
administrative tasks. These experiences have helped me to become more confident
working with children of various ages and needs.
I am hardworking and a quick learner. I look forward to gaining the knowledge and
experience to better understand what being a teacher really means. I really
