Experiment No. Purification of Crude Benzoic Acid by Recrystallization and Sublimation Questions: 1. How does the use of fluted filter paper hasten filtration? Why is it advisable to place a small piece of wire between the funnel and the mouth of the flask during hot filtration? By having the filter paper folded into small portions, the surface area of the paper increases, which makes it easier and faster for the solution to be filtered. The placing of a small piece of wire between the funnel and the mouth of the flask during hot filtration makes pouring the solution easier so that there would not be much dripping. 2. Enumerate 2 techniques that can help prevent premature recrystallization. Explain each item. What can be the consequence if premature recrystallization was not avoided to occur? One technique is to warm up the funnel by steaming it up and quickly wiping it or by using a flame. Another is by pouring a hot solution into the filter in small amounts so that the solution would not have the time to cool down while in the filter. A stemless funnel is also recommended because crystals usually form in the stems while filtering. If premature recrystallization occurs, the premature crystals would clog either the filter paper or the stem of the funnel, which would burden further attempts of filtration.
