COURSE OBJECTIVES
Learn what Biology is
about
Trace its progress and
development as a science
Describe the physical
science
Describe the
characteristics that
differentiate living things
from non living things

BIOLOGY
Study of all living things
From the Greek words: bios life ,
logos study
Biology is an enormous branch of
science
Biological disciplines imply a
significant responsibility for the
protection and welfare of all living
species
The knowledge about the diversity of
life forms and their conservation exploitation is of great importance
for our day by day life.

SIGNIFICANCE OF BIOLOGY
Biologists in various fields have shaped the world
with their discoveries
Food resources and quality, factors that cause
illnesses, plagues, sustainable exploitation of
natural resources, the enhancement and
development of useful species, the discovery and
production of medicines, the study of the functions
of living beings, their inheritance, etc., all are
fields of research through Biology

SCIENTIFIC METHOD

SCIENTIFIC METHOD
The scientific method is the process by which scientists,
collectively and over time, endeavor to construct an
accurate (that is, reliable, consistent and non -arbitrary)
representation of the world
Aims to minimize bias like personal and cultural beliefs through
standard procedures and criteria when testing a hypothesis or
theory.

THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD

1. OBSERVE some aspect of nature, carefully check what
other have found out about it, then frame a question or
IDENTIFY A PROBLEM related to your observation.
2. Develop a HYPOTHESIS or educated guesses about possible
answers to questions or solutions to problems.
3. Use the hypothesis as a guide. Make a PREDICTION.

A statement of what you should observe in the natural world if

you were to go looking for it.

4. Devise ways to TEST the accuracy of your predictions as

by making systematic observations, building models, and
CONDUCTING EXPERIMENTS.
5. Repeat the tests or devise new ones
6. Objectively analyze and report the test results and draw
CONCLUSIONS.
