Traditional Home
The Pueblo live in presentday U.S. states Arizona and New
Mexico. They have nine tribes.
They are the Hopi, Zuni, Acoma,
Laguna, Zia, Chaco Canyon,
Galisteo, Pecos, and Taos. The
Hopi live in Arizona, and the rest
are in New Mexico. The Pueblo
speak many languages, some of
them are Tewa, Tiwa, Keresan,
Zuni, English, and Spanish. They
also live along the Rio Grande
river, which starts in Colorado,
goes right down the middle of
New Mexico, and then separates
the U.S. from Mexico.
The Pueblo, from present day
southwest United States of America,
made their homes out of adobe clay,
desert plants and sand. Pueblos means
villages in Spanish. Pueblo homes are
multi levelled terraced buildings.
Adobe clay squished in with mud,
plants and sand makes a wall, then,
the wall hardens and it becomes a
room. This process allows the Pueblo
to make multi level, terraced
buildings. Pueblos had flat roofs and
many windows.

Culture: Art
In the 1500s, the Spanish,
in search of gold, arrived. The
Spanish were planning to turn
the Pueblo into Catholics. They
forced the Pueblo to work for
them and pay taxes. If they didnt
do any of those things, they
would be killed. Many Pueblo
died because of this. Then the
Pueblo decided to fight back.
They won, but in 14 years the
Spanish were back in control.
Then, Mexico won its
independence from Spain. That
means that the Pueblo were
citizens of Mexico until the U.S.
fought with Mexico and the
Pueblo decided they wanted to be
citizens of the U.S.
The Pueblo also make
very interesting art and pottery.
They make very many pieces of
pottery. They also paint their
faces and bodies certain colors.
They also make masks
depending on what celebration
they are having at the time.
Pueblo pottery is bold with
colors. Each Pueblo has a
different style of art. The
Pueblo also make their art and
pottery by hand.
