Menendez
calls for

girls tweets
KEVIN PENTN @KEVINPENTONAPP
LAKEWOOD Sen. Robert Menendez will ask the federal Justice Department to look into tweets made by
several Jackson teens that intimated violence against
the regions Orthodox community.
The tweets by the teens one of whom is the daughter of a State Police sergeant featured images of
swastikas, Nazi salutes and included references to
bombing and running over Jews in Lakewood.
The Ocean County Prosecutors Office did not file
any charges against the teens, finding that their actions
did not pose a credible threat.
But Menendez wants the Justice Department to ensure that the tweets do not pose a threat to public safety
or homeland security, said Steven Sandberg, a spokesman for the senator.
During a meeting earlier this week with Agudath Israel, an Orthodox advocacy organization, Menendez
winced after someone showed him copies of the tweets,

COLUMN: Sentiments of Valentines Day can be
felt all year long. D1

DAVID P. WILLIS @DPWILLIS732

Hes the man of your dreams, right there on the

computer screen, but he might steal more than your
heart; its your money that hes really after.
Its time for Valentines Day, but even a day of romance is ripe for online scammers.
We have doctors. We have lawyers. We have CEOs
of companies, said Barbara Sluppick, founder of
RomanceScams.org, a website set up to help victims.
Intelligence has nothing to do with these scams. You
can be scammed as long as you have an email address
and a willingness to be in a relationship.
People are falling for online Lotharios, many of
whom operate out of cyber cafes in West Africa and
target people of all ages, but mostly single, divorced or
widowed women over age 40. (Male scammers do pose
as women too.)
They use smooth talk to establish a close rapport
and drain money from people they have never actually
met. They are looking for someone who appears to be
lonely, maybe a little vulnerable, said Special Agent
Barbara Woodruff, an FBI spokeswoman in Newark.
According to the FBI, in the last six months of 2014,

Five new things we learned about Obamacare this year

MICHAEL L. DIAMOND @MDIAMONDAPP

Obamacares second open enrollment comes to a

close at midnight Sunday, sending insurers and consumer advocates scrambling to sign up uninsured residents.
AmeriHealth New Jersey launched television commercials for the first time. Horizon Blue Cross Blue
Shield is hosting insure-a-thons. Health Republic sponsored a health fairat the Freehold Raceway Mall.
Its all part of the Patient Protection and Affordable

Care Act, the landmark law that requires almost everyone to have health insurance or pay a steep penalty, and
tries to slow down the escalating cost of health care.
In the spotlight this weekend are consumers who
arent covered by their employer or Medicare. In New
Jerseys case, they have been referred to a marketplace
operated by the federal government, where they can
shop for plans and receive subsidies if their income
is less than four times the poverty level. Thats $95,400
for a family of four, for example.
The law has been an epic saga. It survived political

challenges and website failures. It has prompted hospitals, doctors offices and even drug stores to reinvent
themselves. It has turned to movie stars, like Zach Galifianakis, to get the word out to hipsters that they, too,
need coverage. And even now its future isnt secure; the
U.S. Supreme Court is scheduled to rule this year on
whether consumers in New Jersey and other states using the federal exchange can receive subsidies.
Here are five things weve learned.
