Cosmetic Chemistry Testing Design
Step 1
What is your product?
Our Product is shampoo.
What qualities are you testing your product for (please select at
least 5)?
Quality #1:Viscosity
Quality #2:Foaminess
Quality #3:Stickiness Ability
Quality #4:Fragrance
Quality #5:Moisturizing factor
Now you need to design a step by step procedure for testing those
properties (you may reference
this document
for assistance if needed). Your
procedures need to be designed in such a way that they can be repeatable
by anyone. You need to have a rough draft of your tests approved by
Charlene before the end of this class period.
Quality #1:Viscosity
step 1: get a 40 degree slanted surface that is 6 foot long and a timer
step 2: poor the shampoo down the surface
step 3: time how long it takes to get to the bottom
step 4: find the highest viscosity product.
Quality #2:Foaminess
step 1
:Gather three types of shampoo(The first is your main brand your
testing, the others are the brands you're comparing to.)
step 2:
Pour a 20 milliliter of the first brand into a 500 beaker. Then do the
same for the second brand with a different beaker.
step 3:
At the same time, pour 100 milliliters of water into each beaker at a
rate of 20 mL/s.
step 4:
Let beakers sit for 30 seconds
step 5:
Measure the height of the foam in each beaker and record your
data.
step 6:
repeat these steps with 30 milliliters of each brand into each 150
milliliters of water and 40 milliliters of each brand into 200 milliliters of
water. Use a 500 milliliter beaker for all trials.
Quality #3:Stickiness Ability
step 1: Take full size printer paper
step 2: use choice of shampoo to create a horizontal line across the middle
of the paper
step 3: take another piece of printer paper the same size as the first
step 4: line the paper parallel to the first
step 5: stick the top of the paper on the line of shampoo
step 6: hold the first paper by the corners in the air
step 7: record time it takes for second paper to part with first paper
step 8: repeat with other choices of shampoo (The shampoo with the longest
time holds the most stickiness, and the shampoo with the shortest time is
the least sticky)
step 9: compare and contrast data.
Quality #4:Fragrance
step 1: Gather a variety of 10 people
step 2: Have them smell the three different brands
step 3: Survey them on which is the best smelling, 2nd best smelling and
the worst smelling
step 4: record the results of the survey
Quality #5:Moisturizing factor
step 1: Obtain a clear plastic tube
step 2: fill the plastic tube the way with cotton balls (densely)
step 3: Pour choice of shampoo in the plastic tube and along the edge of the
plastic tube
step 4: allow and observe the shampoo as it sinks through the cotton balls
step 5: measure the distance shampoo has travelled through the cotton balls
step 6: compare data with different shampoos and the one that has
travelled the farthest, moisturizes the skin the most
