GeometryandDistances#9WriteUp
*IjustassumedthatangleDAEandangleCBEare90degreeangles,howeverthereisno
wayofprovingitfromtheproblem.*
ProblemStatement
Giventhefigureabove,ifAE=20andEB=10,wouldDE+ECbethesamelength?
Process
IusedthePythagoreanTheorem,tocalculatelengthofDEandEC,andthenadded
themtogether.
PythagoreanTheorem: C 2 = a2 + b2 or C 2 = C = x + y
a = x = asidelength (onelegofthetriangle)
b = y = anothersidelength (theoppositelegofthetriangle)
C = thelengthofthehypotenuse
ThenIpluggedinthesidelengthsoftherighttrianglesintothePythagoreanTheorem
tofindthelengthofeachoneshypotenuseandthenaddedthemtogether.
1. Figure1
c. DE + EC 25 + 14.14 = 39.14
3. ComparingFigure1and2
a. 40.39 39.14 or 40.39 =/ 39.14
IalsodidfindouthowsomeonecouldconfusethesumlengthofDE+ECinfigure1
andfigure2tobethesametotallength.Idiscoveredthisbyincorrectlyusingthe
distanceformula,whichderivesfromthePythagoreanTheorem.
DistanceFormula: C =
onacoordinateplane.Itcanalsobewrittenas C = x + y
Where:
x2 x1 = x = asidelength (onelegofthetriangle)
y2 y1 = y = anothersidelength (theoppositelegofthetriangle)
C = thelengthofthehypotenuse
HereIusedthePythagoreanTheoremtofindeachtriangle'shypotenuselength.I
keptthedistanceinradicalformallthewayuntiltheveryend,andthatishowI
messedup.WhenyouusethePythagoreanTheoremtofinddistances,youhaveto
squarerootthesumoftwosidelengthssquaredinstandardformandthenaddthe
sumofthetwodifferenthypotenuses.Inthiswrongwaytodoit,Iinsteadaddedthe
sumoftheofthetwosidelengthssquaredinstandardformandaddedthattothe
otherhypotenusebeforebringingtheradicalbacktostandardform.Thisiswhat
wouldvetrickedmeintothinkingthatthesumofDE+ECinfigure1and2arethe
sameequaltotallength.
Solution
40.39 39.14 or 40.39 =/ 39.14
Ifyouweretochangethesidelengthsfigure1,sothatAE=20andBE=10,thetotal
lengthofDECinfigure1wouldnotbeequaltoDECinfigure2.
ThesumofDE+ECinfigure1
isnotanequal
