GeometryandDistances#9WriteUp

*IjustassumedthatangleDAEandangleCBEare90degreeangles,howeverthereisno
wayofprovingitfromtheproblem.*

ProblemStatement
Giventhefigureabove,ifAE=20andEB=10,wouldDE+ECbethesamelength?

Process

IusedthePythagoreanTheorem,tocalculatelengthofDEandEC,andthenadded
themtogether.
PythagoreanTheorem: C 2 = a2 + b2 or C 2 = C = x + y

a = x = asidelength (onelegofthetriangle)
b = y = anothersidelength (theoppositelegofthetriangle)
C = thelengthofthehypotenuse

ThenIpluggedinthesidelengthsoftherighttrianglesintothePythagoreanTheorem
tofindthelengthofeachoneshypotenuseandthenaddedthemtogether.

1. Figure1

152 + 102 =225 + 100 =325 18.03 = DE

b. 102 + 202 = 100 + 400 = 500 22.36 = EC
a.

c. DE + EC 18.03 + 22.36 = 40.39

2. Figure2

152 + 202 = 225 + 400 = 625 = 25 = DE

b. 102 + 102 = 100 + 100 = 200 14.14 = EC
a.

c. DE + EC 25 + 14.14 = 39.14
3. ComparingFigure1and2
a. 40.39 39.14 or 40.39 =/ 39.14

andfigure2tobethesametotallength.Idiscoveredthisbyincorrectlyusingthe
distanceformula,whichderivesfromthePythagoreanTheorem.
DistanceFormula: C =

(x x ) + (y y ) where x and y areusuallypoints

onacoordinateplane.Itcanalsobewrittenas C = x + y
Where:
x2 x1 = x = asidelength (onelegofthetriangle)

y2 y1 = y = anothersidelength (theoppositelegofthetriangle)
C = thelengthofthehypotenuse

HereIusedthePythagoreanTheoremtofindeachtriangle'shypotenuselength.I

otherhypotenusebeforebringingtheradicalbacktostandardform.Thisiswhat
wouldvetrickedmeintothinkingthatthesumofDE+ECinfigure1and2arethe

Solution
40.39 39.14 or 40.39 =/ 39.14
Ifyouweretochangethesidelengthsfigure1,sothatAE=20andBE=10,thetotal
