STATIC AND DYNAMIC ANALYSIS OF

CABLE STAYED BRIDGES
Because of its aesthetic appeal, economic grounds and ease of

erection, the cable-stayed bridge is considered as the most

suitable construction type for mid- and large bridges spanning
from 200 m to about 1000 m.
These bridges proved more economic, for moderate spans,
than either the suspension or arch bridge forms.
The tallest cable-stayed bridge in the world, Millau Viaduct
with the tallest pier 341 metres tall and roadway 270 metres
high, spanning the Tarn River in France has been completed in
December 2004. Millau Viaduct has a total length of 2460m
with seven towers and eight spans

Objectives of Analytical Study

To

study the behavior of Cable stayed Bridges of different

shaped pylon (A and H shape ) for different spans of bridges.
Carrying out static and time history and Moving load analysis
for different configuration of bridges.
To study Time period and Natural frequency for different
mode shapes.
To study Maximum pylon deflection.
To study Longitudinal and lateral reaction at pylon bottom.

CABLE ARRANGEMETNS
Different

types of cable-stayed bridges are discussed based

on the arrangement of stay cables including harp, fan, and
semi-fan.

TYPICAL CABLE STAYED BRIDGE

MODEL

H-Shape pylon with span of 220mts and Pylon Height of span/4

CONCLUIONS BASED ON ANALYTICAL

STUDY

Time period of vibration of cable-stayed bridges (under static load) increases

with increase in span and decreases with decrease in height of pylon. Pylon
shape does not seem to have any significant effect on the time period.
The frequency of vibration of cable-stayed bridges under dead load is higher for
lesser Span, pylon height does have with decrease in pylon height, and
frequency is seen to increase. Pylon shape does not have any considerable
effect on the frequency.
It can be observed that for pylon heights of span/3, the pylon top deflection is
more in case of A-pylons and less in case of H pylons. Thus, it can be accurately
inferred that H-shaped pylons have higher stiffness that its A-shaped pylons. In
all other cases it found to be same.
It can be noticed that the maximum deflection of deck increases with increase in
the span irrespective of pylon shape and pylon height
