AFFIRMATIONS, AFFIRMATIONS,

AFFIRMATIONS!!!
I believe it is important to constantly and consistently affirm student ideas. Affirmations are
given by the teacher or by the students individually or in groups.

MOVEMENT
Movement helps children to learn and keep them alert. Movements include gestures and moving
around the classroom. Incorporating movements and gestures helps provide children with tools
to help recall information.

BRAIN BREAKS
Brain breaks are a form of movement in the classroom and last no more than five minutes. Brain
breaks are usually a way for students to dance around to a song and video without thinking about
learning content. Brain breaks are important because they give students a chance to relax their
minds and prepare for the next learning block.

MUSIC
I incorporate music into the classroom in a variety of ways. Music is played during work time,
transitioning time, and during brain breaks. Music helps concentration, aids in learning, and
promotes relaxation.

ART
Art allows students to apply what they have learned. Art can be used across the curriculum in all
of the content areas.

ASSESSMENTS
Assessments are given frequently. Not all assessment are for a grade. Most assessments are to
check-in to see if the students are understanding the content. Examples of check-ins are as
follows:
1. Thumbs
a. Up- I GOT IT!
b. Down- I DONT HAVE IT
c. To the side- IM NOT SURE. I SORT OF GET IT

2. Lights
a. Green-IGOT IT!
b. Yellow- IM NOT SURE. I SORT OF GET IT
c. Red- I DONTT HAVE IT
3. Exit Tickets- students will be asked to answer a question and write in complete sentences
to explain what they have learned
4. Word Splash- write all of the words that come to mind when thinking about
5. Games- there are many games students can play as a whole group that allow for me to
walk around and look for student understanding.
