Americans in Paris.
The 1970 work is a poster design that Indiana created as publicity for the Four
Americans in Paris exhibition organized by the Museum of Modern Art.
Robert Indiana knew the importance of words. In the fifties he lived on the Manhattan
waterfront, where he first began to see the world as an opportunity for visual art. Today,
he is famous for art portrayed through multiple mediums, from poetry to painting.
He is most well known for his large, unusual sculptures. Whether you know his name or
not, most would recognize pieces of his iconic works. Perhaps the most famous is the
colorful LOVE sculpture. The original was created in 1966, but innumerable versions
are found everywhere, from cufflinks to graffiti. Its been duplicated in different colors,
sizes, styles and languages.
The University of Oklahoma recently acquired their very own LOVE sculpture due to a
generous donation from 1957 OU alumnus William Obering. It sits outside Jacobson

The LOVE Sculpture is the culmination of ten years of work based on the original
premise that the word is an appropriated and usable element of art, just as Picasso and the
Cubists made use of it at the beginning of the century, which evolved inevitably, in both
my LOVE paintings and sculpture, into the concept that the word is also a fit and
