1. THESIS STATEMENT

Present the projects argument or interpretation in two sentences. If you are using the NHD theme, you might want to make it
evident in your thesis statement.

Dr. Beatrice Pearce was a heroine to both cities of Waukegan, IL and Ketchikan, AK.
Beatrice Pearce had a passion for her career as a doctor and gave all of her attention to her patients and the
people of Waukegan, Illinois and Ketchikan, Alaska. Pearce was a strong woman for one being a doctor in a
society where barely any woman could establish the career as a doctor and two a woman who did not bare any
children in a society where a woman was supposed to be a stay-at-home-mom.

2. SUMMARY OF PROJECT

Briefly explain your project and its conclusion. Include: How and why did change happen and what was the impact? Why is
it historically significant? What historical meaning or importance can we learn from your findings?

This project on Dr. Beatrice Pearce is about her lifetime from beginning to end and what she accomplished as a
doctor. Pearce is historically significant because she was the first female doctor in Lake County and one of the first
doctors female doctors in Ketchikan, AK. Pearce also attended a Woman Suffrage Convention in Waukegan and
became the treasurer. Pearce fought for what was right and accomplished many obstacles in her life. The purpose of
choosing Dr. Beatrice Pearce for my project was to show woman and other people that anyone can accomplish
anything that they put their minds to. Dr. Beatrice accomplished the title of being the first female doctor in two
cities.

3. Required for projects using the National History Day theme only.

Explain how this project integrates the NHD theme Leadership & Legacy in [Chicago/Illinois] History into its argument.

4. PROCESS
A. What historical question did you start off withand how did it change once you began doing
your research?
Why did Beatrice Pearce give her all to the people surrounding her?
My question did not change throughout my research.

B. What kinds of sources did you use as evidence to develop your argument (for example,
letters, photographs, government documents, interviews, etc.)?
The sources I used as evidence were letters, newspaper articles, photographs, newsletters and websites.

C. Select one piece of evidence that you used and explain how it influenced your argument.

In the website Lake County, Illinois History, states that Beatrice and George had no children, and
devoted their lives to the well-being of the residents of Ketchikan. The quote in this website influences my
argument because it shows that Beatrice Pearce had a passion for her career and gave all of her attention to her
patients and the people of Ketchikan, Alaska. Pearce was a strong woman for one being a doctor in a society
where barely any woman could establish the career as a doctor and two a woman who did not bare any
children to keep the city of Ketchikan healthy.
