DESIGN BASIS STATEMENT (Inc. sources of info/data, assumptions made, standards, etc.)

1.0 Design Methodology

This slab deflection verification has been done to ensure that the version's of PROKON
(Continuos Beam Module Ver. 2.4.13 and SAFE 12.2.0, Manila Office is currently using is giving
acceptable result.
A manual calculation has been done based from the method as per ACI-318 and BS8110 Part2
and compared it to the result of PROKON (Continuos Beam Module Ver. 2.4.13 and SAFE 12.2.0)
With this, it has been found out that both SAFE 12.2.0 and PROKON gives the same result with
manual calculation in terms of flexural reinforcement and deflection. SAFE 12.2.0 uses the
provision of ACI 318 in terms of calculating the effective moment of inertia, however uses
ACI435 in calculating modulus of rupture of concrete no manner what design code has been
specified in the preferences either using British Standard, Austrailian Standard, etc. while
PROKON longterm deflection is based from BS8110 Part 2 . Likewise in terms of ULS (flexural
required reinforcement) PROKON, SAFE12.2.0 and Manual Check gives the almost the same
PROKON
results. (Continuos Beam Module Ver. 2.4.13) - applicable only to one way spanning reinforced concrete slab
SAFE 12.2.0 - applicable to any type of reinforced concrete slab

Conclusion:
SAFE 12.2.0, underestimate the long term deflection to the fact that it is using a
modulus rupture of concrete based from ACI-318 which is 0.62 fc' and this parameter
can not be controlled by the user as it is internally calculated by the program.
ACI-435 stated that using fr = 0.62 fc' underestimate the calculated long term
deflection, in that case it is advised to used fr=0.33 fc', which produced good
correlation between the calculated deflection and the reported field deflection.
See appendix B and C for detail verification.

Recommendation (when using SAFE 12.2.0)

1.0 When using British Standard please note that we are using

fcu, and the modulus of rupture the program uses fc'. The relation
between the cube strength is, fc' = 0.8 fcu
2.0 To resolved the scenario of the problem above, instead of

allowing the software to calculate the modulus of rupture, go to

main menu select run, then cracking analysis option and select
user define, and input the calculated modulus of rupture using
the equation 0.33(0.8Fcu).
3.0 In the first iteration used reinforcement based from finite
element design, however if locatized areas have significant
deflection, re run the model again by using quick tension rebar
specification to minimized the deflection, but take note that this
deflection are only true in the areas where reinforcement
specified have been provided in the actual design.
4.0 Deflection should be based from load case sequencing as detail in
the appendix
"A" in this report.
