SPEECH ORGANS

THE WAY THE SOUNDS ARE PRODUCED

SPEECH ORGANS
BUCCAL CAVITY
Part of the vocal tract lying between the
Pharynx and the lips, containing the
tongue and the teeth and bounded on top
by alveolar ridge, the palate and the
velum.
Air flow is directed outwards the oral
cavity

TEETH
The enamelled bony structures set in two
curving lines in the upper and lower gums.
The upper teeth (rarely the lower ones)
may serve as passive articulators.

JAW

Also called mandible. Its a horseshoeshaped that holds the lower teeth and
forms the lower jawline and chin.

SPEECH ORGANS
NOSTRIL
Either one of the external openings to the
nasal cavity in the nose.

LIPS
Either of the two fleshy, manoeuvrable
organs at the entrance of the mouth. The lips
are important in speech. They can be pressed
together to produce the sounds p and b,
brought into contact with the teeth (as in f
and v, or rounded to produce the lip-shape
for vowels like u.

TONGUE

The tongue is a very important articulator and it can be

moved into many places and different shapes. The
tongue is divided into different parts: tip, blade, front,
back and root.

SPEECH ORGANS
NASAL CAVITY
The large cavity lying above the oral
cavity and connecting the nostrils to the
pharynx. When the velum is raised, the
nasal cavity is closed off from the rest of
the vocal tract.

HARD PALATE
The hard bony structure at the top of the roof
of the mouth, just behind the alveolar ridge.

SOFT PALATE
The flexible sheet of muscular tissue
wich makes up the rear part of the root
of the mouth, just behind the palate. Its
connected to the palate by a hinge
which allows it to be raised and
lowered.

SPEECH ORGANS
PHARYNGEAL CAVITY
To produce consonant sounds articulated
in the back of the mouth or throat.

LARYNX
A complex, mostly cartilaginous, structure
connecting the trachea to the pharynx and
acting as a valve through which air must
pass during breathing and speech.

ESOPHAGUS
The tube connecting the stomach to the
pharynx.

SPEECH ORGANS
TRACHEA
The cartilaginous channel connecting the
lungs to the larynx through which air
passes during breathing and speaking.

LUNGS
A pair of spongy, saclike organs located
between the chest and playing a vital role in
respiration and in providing a pulmonic
airstream for speech.

DIAPHRAGM

The dome-shaped muscular partition between

the chest and the abdomen, partly responsable
for contracting the lungs during breathing.
