Health
In 1969, approximately 50% of
children walked or bicycled to school;
today fewer than 15% of children
walk or bicycle to school. As a result,
kids today are less active, less
independent, and less healthy
Over the past 40 years, rates of
obesity have soared among children
of all ages in the united states, and
approximately 25 million children and
adolescents more than 33% -- are
now overweight, obese, or at the
risk of becoming so. (12)
Kids are less active today, and 23%
of children get no free time
physical activity at all (13)
As you can see here, the rate of
obesity among adults have also
increased.
About one-quarter of health care
costs in the US are attributed to
obesity. (15)
The prevalence of obesity is so great
that todays generation of children
may be the first in over 200 years to
live less healthy and have shorter
lifespan than their parents. (14)
