Defense Against Infection

1) Phagocytic Cells
(White blood cells): Engulf foreign
invaders before they affect their target
cell. They are NON-SPECIFIC.

2) Antibodies:

Are protein molecules produced

by white blood cells.

They attach to the surface of

foreign invaders (antigen) and
deactivate them.

The presence of foreign invaders

stimulates white blood cells to
produce antibodies.

This reaction is ACTIVE

IMMUNITY. SPECIFIC DEFENSE.

3) Interferon:
It is a chemical produced by the
cells of the body already infected by
viruses.
These cells release interferon to
warn other cells and then they
produce anti-viral proteins. NONSPECIFIC.

4) Vaccination:

It is the heat killed virus, plus

other support substances, that are
injected into the bloodstream.

The outer covering of a heat killed

virus is the antigen and the body
makes antibodies against it to
deactivate it.

This is ACTIVE IMMUNITY and

SPECIFIC.

Vaccines make you immune to the

virus without causing illness.

5) Booster Shots

A type of injection immunity

whereby you are given
antibodies produced by another
organism.

These eventually wear off. This

is PASSIVE IMMUNITY because
your body didnt produce the
antibodies.
