Our Presidents

Day mini-unit
came to a

close this week.
Students
learned about the
significance of
Presidents Day and
discovered interesting
information about
George Washington and
Abraham Lincoln.
Our natural
resources unit has
begun! Students
identified the difference
between people-made
and natural resources,
and brainstormed a
variety of each. We
even took a walking tour
and identify both types
of resources!
On Thursday,
students enjoyed the Fun
Run, which included a
multitude of exciting
activities. Later that day,
we celebrated Sunrises
top runners at the Kiva
assembly.

Reading/Writing
The more that you
read, the more things you
will know. The more that
you learn, the more
places youll go! In
honor of Love of Reading
Month and Dr. Seuss
birthday, students started
their Dr. Seuss author
study. The focus of
students literacy jobs was
responding to Dr. Seuss
literature. They
compared and
contrasted texts and
wrote a simile about
reading. They listened to
Mr. Brown Can Moo, Can
You?, Oh, the Places
Youll Go!, Oh the Thinks
You Can Think!, and I Can
Read with My Eyes Shut!
Students word work
focus is digraphs. This
week, students
brainstormed, read, and
wrote words with the
digraph /th/.
Students are
blossoming as writers and
are working diligently on
their Small Moments
stories.

Math Corner
Students attention to
precision and ability to search for
and make sense of structure
served them well as they created
counting strips (vertical number
lines). As a class, we cut apart a
horizontal counting strip and
created a hundreds chart!
Students searched for patterns
and shared their observations.
They also played a new game
that involves numbers covered by
pennies. They were charged with
the task of identifying the missing
numbers and justifying how they
determined the missing number.
