defined in any visual design or work of art.

use to group points
into meaning

Closure

LINE

Line can be found in Nature

Line can function independently

Lines can be combined


with other lines to create
textures and patterns

Characteristic of Line are:

Width- thick, thin, tapering, uneven

Length - long, short, continuous, broken

Direction- horizontal, vertical, diagonal,


curving, perpendicular, oblique, parallel,
radial, zigzag

Focus- sharp, blurry, fuzzy, choppy

Feeling- sharp, jagged, graceful, smooth

HORIZONTAL LINE
suggests a feeling of rest or repose

VERTICAL LINE
communicate a feeling of
loftiness and spirituality

DIAGONAL LINE
suggest a feeling of movement or direction

SHAPE
When a line crosses itself
or intersects with other
lines to enclose a space it
creates a shape.
Shape is two-dimensional
it has heights and width
but no depth.

shape, and a pyramid,
which is three
dimensional is a form.

TEXTURE
The surface quality of an
object.

Rock - rough and


jagged.
Silk - soft and
smooth
Wood - hard and
smooth.

Texture also refers to


the way a picture is
made to look rough or
smooth.
