1.1 Purpose and types of pumping stations


The main purpose of pumping stations is to transfer fluids from
low points to higher points.
The main types of pumping stations are:
Wastewater PS.
Water PS.
Sludge PS.
Storm water PS.

1.2 Types of pumps


Pumps are classified into two main categories:
Kinetic pumps.

Centrifugal pumps ( radial, axial, mixed flow)


Turbine (vertical) pumps

Positive displacement pumps.

Rotary pumps ( screw, lobe)


Reciprocating pumps (plunger)

The vertical pumps are equipped by a diffuser instead the Volute

In the screw pump a revolving shaft fitted with blades rotates in an inclined
trough and pushes the water up the trough.

In the reciprocating pump a piston sucks the fluid into a cylinder then pushes it
up causing the water to rise.
