Title of Lesson or Activity: What kind of candy did you get on Halloween?
Objective:
Standards of Learning:
K.14 The student will display gathered dat in picture graphs and will answer questions related to
the data.
K.16 The student will identify, describe, and extend repeating patterns.
Materials:
1 Reeses
1 Starburst
1 Hersheys Chocolate bar
1 Tootsie Roll
1 Skittles
Bulletin Board Paper
Marker
Graph Template
Students Math/Science Journals
20 Halloween Patterns Activities
Halloween shapes
Pattern Cards

Procedure:
1. Before beginning the lesson, I will gather and organize the materials. I will set up the bulletin
board paper and put out all of the necessary materials on the tables.
2. I will invite the students to the rug using a pattern. Before beginning the lesson, I will ask the
students to identify the pattern that I did.
3. I will introduce the graph to the students. I will ask the students:
What are we going to create on this paper?
What question do you think we are going to answer with this graph? ***I will write the
question on the paper after the students identify the question.
Raise your hand if you got a reeses/snickers/hersheys/tootsie roll/skittles in your trick or
treat bag.
4. I will count the students hands and record the results on the graph on the bulletin board
paper. I will use draw pictures of each candy on the graph. I will explain to the students that
we are making a graph using pictures and it is called a picture graph.

5. After we have completed the graph, I will ask the students questions about the graph. I will
ask:
Which candy did the most people get?
Which candy did the least number of people get?
How many students got reeses/starburst/hersheys/tootsie roll/skittles?
How many more reeses/starburst/hersheys/tootsie roll/skittles did students get than?
4. After creating and discussing out picture graph, I will explain the math stations to the
students.
5. The first station the students will recreate the picture graph that we created as a class. The
students will use a graph template and draw pictures of the candy to indicate the number of
students that got those types of candy in their bags. I will sit at this station to help students
because this is the first time they have completed an activity like this.
6. The second station the students will complete the Halloween Patterns activity. They will cut
out the pictures and complete the pattern by pasting the pictures in the appropriate box.
7. The third station the students will create patterns using Halloween shapes. I will instruct the
students to create an ABAB pattern, an ABCABC pattern, and an AABAAB pattern.
8. After I explain the stations to the students, I will call students one table at a time to go to their
seats.
9. Once all of the students are at their desks, I will instruct them to begin. I will keep an eye on
the other tables to ensure they are staying on task.
10. The students will have 10 minutes at each station.
11. Once the students have cycled through all of the stations. I will review with the students what
they did at each station and then line the students up for lunch.
Differentiation:
At the third station, I will have Emi create the three patterns plus an ABACABAC pattern.
At the third station, I will have Santana create one of three patterns that Im requiring the
students to make.
At the third station, I will have Sarifa and Jack to create the patterns that they are able to make.
