OBJ: Describe the world ocean.


Explain what is meant by oceanography.

I. The Water Planet - about 75% of Earth’s surface is covered with water.
- most of it is salt water.
World Ocean = body of salt water covering much of Earth’s surface.
- Earth is the only planet that has a covering of liquid
water.

II. Divisions of the - the world ocean is divided into three major bodies.
World Ocean - Atlantic Ocean
- Pacific Ocean
- Indian Ocean
- the Arctic and Antarctic oceans are
considered part of the Atlantic and Pacific
Oceans.
Seas = refers to a smaller body of water connected to an
ocean.
Gulf = is a large area of ocean, larger than a bay, reaching
into land.

III. Size and Depth - Pacific Ocean is the largest and deepest of the world’s
oceans. Average depth of 4.3 km.
- Atlantic Ocean is he 2nd largest ocean. Average
depth of 3.3 km deep.
- several seas and gulfs are part of the Atlantic
Ocean.
- Indian Ocean is the smallest ocean. Average depth of
3.8 km.

IV. Oceanography = study of Earth’s oceans.


- oceanographers study the oceans and ocean life.
