 GULF
A Gulf is a deep inlet of Ocean or Sea surrounded by land and with one opening
to wider Ocean
Gulfs vary in size, shape and depth
They are large and deep that bays
Gulf are sometimes also connected to strait
IT IS SAID THAT GULFS ARE FORMED BY MOVEMENTS OF EARTH’S
TECTONIC PLATES OR CRUST
For example
PERSIAN GULF:
 Is almost an enclosed sea
 A part of Indian Ocean
 Lies between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran
 241,000 square KM wide
 Opens into Arabian sea
 And has high level of saltines

BAY AND BIGHT


 A bay is body of water connected to an ocean
 partially surrounded by a curved piece of land
 is usually smaller and less enclosed then a gulf
 a mouth of bay, where it meets the ocean is usually wider than a gulf

Bay of Bengal
One of the largest Bay in the world
Are extremely large

Water Erosion
Bays are also called Lagoons, Sounds and bights
Bight is a long gradual curve formed on shoreline
The Great Australian Bight is one of the largest bights in the world.
It’s 1160 KM on shoreline

 STARIT OR CHANNEL
A strait is a narrow waterway that flows between two lands and connects two
large water bodies.

For Example:
The strait of Gibraltar
Allow water to flow between Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Ocean.

 The Strait of Bab-el-Mandeb


 Connects The gulf of Aden and the red sea

 The Strait of Malacca


 Between Malaysia and Indonesia
 And is the longest Strait

The word Channel and Strait are the same


English Channel:

The strait of Malacca between Malaysia and Indonesia is the longest starit in the
world.

 PENINUSLA:

 Peninsula is a land which is connected to the main land and is


surrounded by water on its three sides.
 They are long and thin

Malay Peninsula
The Baja California Peninsula in Mexico
Cape York Peninsula in Australia

 ISTHMUS:

 Isthmus is a narrow land that connects the two main land


 Divides two ocean or sea’s
For Examples:
 The Isthmus of Panama
 Connects North America and South America
 Divided Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea ( a part of Atlantic Ocean )

 Isthmus of Kra in Thailand


 The narrowest part of Malay peninsula
 Connects Gulf of Thailand
 Divides Pacific Ocean and Andaman Sea

 ISLAND
Island is a land that is surrounded by water
Large Island:

2) New Guinea
3) Britain
