Episode 7: The Clean Room
Clair "Pat" Patterson:
The first person to know the age of the Earth. (4.5 billions years)
He studied the levels of uranium and lead in asteroids
He used Uranium Radiation Dating, very similar to Carbon
Dating.
During his study, he noticed a strange trend. In recent time, the
amount of lead in the atmosphere/environment rose drastically.
He concluded that this must be because of Leaded-Gasoline.
Dr. Robert Kehoe:
Corporate Sell-Out. He was hired by Lead-production companies
to ease the mind of the consumer. In other words, twist science to
cover up the tisk of lead.Episode 7.notebook April 23, 2014
Propaganda: advertising technique used to persuade/convince or
trick consumers/people into what you want them to think.
Lead companies used advertisements to convince consumers that
lead was safe, even though it isn't.
In modern times, people are still using propaganda to fight science
and medicine. Anti-Vaccine Movement is one example. There are also
people who use bunk studies to fight medicine at every turn.
There is a HUGE debate about GMO's, Genetically Modified
Organisms. Most GMO''s are grains or food products. Science has
taken hybridization of plants further. Instead of hoping for a good mix
from the randomness of nature, science goes in and makes it happen.
‘There is concern for the impact on the environment (bugs and soil and
all) and there is concern for impact on consumers. There is a concern
for ethics
Global Warming is another HUGE debate where science "just can't
agree".Episode 7.notebook April 23, 2014
Planetary Nebula Theory: explanation for the formation of the
planets. States that the Solar System was once a cloudy disc of dust
and rock that slowly clumped together to form planets. We have seen
planetary nebula around other stars, which supports the idea.
Earth is 4.5 billion years old. This took us until the 20th century to
know.
In 1650, Archbishop Usher used the Bible and History to estimate
the age of the earth. He got a birth date of Oct 22, 4004 BC, at 6pm.
Science has tried other methods to date the Earth Birth. One was
counting layers. Scientists noticed that the Earth has layers, like in the
Grand Canyon, or along Rt 22 in Ohio. Each of these layers is a layer
of ditt and sediment laid down a long time ago. If you can find out
how long it takes to build a layer, and count the layers, you can find
the age of the Earth. But, there is no nice single time measurement
for a layer.Episode 7.notebook April 23, 2014
Saturnalia: Roman celebration of the god Saturn, which takes place
around the winter solstice, and includes themes of peace, and gift-
giving. When the early Christian Church wanted to pull in more pagan
followers, they moved Christmas to match Saturnalia.
Even the Romans knew lead was bad.
