Episode 12: World Set Free
Venus: It's hot. But it hasn't always been.
For the first million or so years, Venus was probably a lot like
Earth. However, something happened and CO went nuts.
Venus lost is oceans of water to space and all the COQ)
released by volcanos could not be absorbed and stayed in
the atmosphere.
It's atmosphere is almost entirely CO2 with Sulfuric Acid
Clouds. It is 90 times as dense as our atmosphere.
It is hot enough to melt Lead (Plumbum).
Charles David Keeling: one of the first scientist to notice a
rise in Carbon levels in our atmosphere and oceans.
Most disturbing was that it was increasing faster and faster
since the Industrial Revolution.
Every year we put 30 million tons of CO: into the
atmosphere.
Can Volcanos be the cause?
1) Volcanoes only put out 2% of what we put out.
2) Volcanic Carbon is usually heavier than our Carbon.
Carbon14 is emitted with volcanos, where fossil fuels
are almost entirely Carbon12.
Can the Sun be the cause?
1) Nope, The Sun hasn't changed significantly during the
warming.
2) We are warming at night, and in the Winter, more than
we should be.Episode 12.notebook June 04, 2014
Climate & Weather:
Climate change - change in the overall average of
temperatures and weather.
Weather is fickle and can be changed by even small
disturbances.
Polar Ice Caps:
1) When the ice caps melt, they release water, which will
raise the sea level, which will, make VW beach front
property. This would really suck for N'awlens.
2) Water absorbes heat far better than ice. So, more water
means more heat absorbed, means less ice, means more
water.. means rinse, wash, repeat.
Positive Feedback Loop: when the results of a process make
the process happen faster.
Permafrost happens in a similar fashion; this time it releases
trapped, frozen organic material to thaw and rot, releasing
CO2.
[Augustin Mouchot: Invented a Solar powered machine that
could provide mechanical energy to whatever you needed
Basically he used a mirror to simulate the magnifying glass
Jand ant experiment. He made a steam engine powered by the
jsun. This was 1878
BUT coal got really cheap and everyone fargot
Frank Shuman: Used Salar power ta work an irrigation system
in Egypt, and proposed using a small patch of desert in Africa
Ithat could power all of industry in the early 20th century.
BUT VW happened and they needed the metal for
weapons.
Enter Wl and the Cold War and we really really wanted to
blow up Russia. Or at least, show how much more awesome
'Murica is, The most impressive way to show off our rocket
power, was go to the moon
IThe awesome side effect of the Apollo missions was not a war
lof superiority or chauvinistic shawing-off. It was what some
people call "The Overview Effect." The astronauts who got to
see the world from space, ar the moan, were struck with the
beauty of our Earth as one single point in the vastness of
spaceEpisode 12.notebook June 04, 2014
