Episode 10: The Electric Boy!
Field Forces: forces that can act without direct contact, and
across distances.
Big Field Forces: Gravity & Magnetism.
Newton knew that gravity was a force, but didn't know how
that force was carried.
Michael Faraday: born in 1791, he worked in a printing press
from the ages of 13-21.
One day, he attended a lecture by Sir Humphrey Davy, and
was amazed at the new science of Electronics.
He was so amazed that he transcribed the lecture and made it
into a book, which he presented to Davy.
Lucky for Faraday, bad for Davy, some chemicals blew up in
Davy's face, and left him temporarily blind. So, he needed an
assistant. He hired Faraday.Episode 10.notebook May 14, 2014
Faraday continued to work at the Royal Institute and
eventually did the following:
-Made the first Motor
-Studied glass & failed (Davy tried to sabotage career)
-Developed the first Generator
-Showed that a magnet can bend / rotate light.
-lllustrated that light is an electro-magnetic thing.
Because of Faraday, we know that Electricity and Magnetism
are two sides of the same coin, and that light is also a
reaction of the electromagnetic force.
Sadly, Faraday was getting sick and loosing his memory,
and he couldn't figure out the Math to explain his idea of Field
Forces.
Maxwell believed in Faraday, he took Faraday's ideas, did
the math and published a book, which he presented to
Faraday. Using Calculus, Maxwell made equations to explain
magnetism, electricity, and light. These equations are
collectively Maxwell's Equations. He also introduced the idea
that these fields are not static and stationary, but they move
outward at the speed of light.
