Government System

of India
Background: India was under British rule for 89
years, gaining independence in 1947. In 1949, the
Constituent Assembly adopted the Constitution of
India. One year later, India became a sovereign,
democratic republic. The constitution made India a
secular state and is home to a wide variety of
cultures.
The Government of India is the governing
authority over 29 countries and seven union
territories. The capital of India is located in New
Delhi. India is known today as being the second
largest and fastest growing economy worldwide.

Branches of Government
Judicial Branch

President
The President of India is the head of executive,
legislature, and judiciary, and commander and
chief of armed forces. The President acts in
harmony with the Prime Minister who leads the
Council of Ministers.
Prime Minister
The Prime Minister is the Chief of Government and
Chief Advisor to the President. Additional
responsibilities include the head of the Council of
Ministers and head of the executive branch. The
current Prime Minister is Narendra Modi.
Vice President
The Vice President has control of the legislative
branch, and acts as chairman to the Rajya Sabha
or Council of States. The Vice President is
Mohammad Hamid Ansari.

The Supreme Court consists of a Chief


Justice and 30 associate judges who
are all appointed by the President.
Indian justice system consists of a
unitary system at state and federal
level. The judiciary consists of
the Supreme Court of India, High
Courts of India, and District
Courts and Sessions Courts.

Legislative Branch
Bicameral Parliament or Sansad
consists of the Council of States or
Rajya Sabha. The Rajya Sabha
consists of 245 seats up to 12 of
which are appointed by the president.
The residual seats are elected at state
assemblies. Members of the Rajya
Sabha serve six-year terms. The
People's Assembly or Lok Sabha has
545 seats. 543 members elected by
popular vote, 2 appointed by the
president. The members of the Lok
Sabha serve five year terms.
