Romeo & Juliet

FINAL PROJECT
(60 assessment points)
Since I couldnt decide on just one, I am giving you TEN choices. I am only requiring you to choose ONE, therefore I
expect all projects to show that an abundant amount of effort was put forth. I am looking for your absolute best effort on
these and will not accept work that is shoddily done or clearly rushed.
You have approximately one class period and one week of personal time to complete this assignment.
All assignments that Include a writing component must be typed following MLA formatting (12 point Times New
Roman font, double spaced, heading, etc)
I will not accept late work. ALL creative work must be turned in to me at the beginning of class on March 26.
Papers and other typed electronic work can be submitted via Google Docs with the SAME deadline.
NOTEif you want to work with groups or in a partnership, you may choose your own group members, but you must
follow the info below:
o

Students in 1st, 3rd or 6th period may work together across periods (ie 1st hour student can work with a 3rd
period student) or students in 4th and 5th period may work together.

If you choose to work with someone from another class, you must know that you will NOT be able to
benefit from in-class work time the way other students might be able to.

All group members will receive the SAME grade, regardless of effort, so make sure to choose your
groups wisely and carefully.

There will be no extensions for technological difficulties and if you are absent on the day your project is due, you must
email it to me, bring it to school, or have a friend deliver itfailure to do so and take ownership of this will result in a 0,
no questions asked. Please do not test this...
Due Date: _________________________________
UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTED, THESE ARE INDIVIDUAL PROJECTS
1) Rewrite a scene from Romeo and Juliet into moderrn language. Explain the setting, costumed, props,
characters and the stage directions for your scene. (60 line minimum) Provide an analysis (8-12 sentences total) as to why
this scene is critical to the play as a whole, and why this scene is one where modernization works particularly well.
2) Choose any scene/ set of lines in the play. Let them be the inspiration for your
own writing: a poem/ a diary entry, a monologue, a short story. In addition to your creative writing (Minimum of 3 pages
typed, double spaced), you must write at least one full page (typed) explaining why the scene inspired you.
3) Graphic Novel- Create a graphic novel for Romeo and Juliet. Choose the most important scenesfrom your point of
viewand tell the story of Romeo and Juliet. The quality of your project will be determined by the following: the extent
to which your graphic novel includes the entire story of the play, the quality/effort put into the artwork, and the inclusion
of an introduction in which you explain what you tried to capture in your recreation of the play (e.g. I wanted to
emphasize Romeos and Juliets social positions . . ..) Requirements: graphic representation of the play, introduction with
explanation. Words should accompany the graphics. Must include at least 8 drawings with captions and an illustrated
cover. You may choose black and white or color.
4) Artistic Interpretation- Choose a few lines from the play that are meaningful

to you. Draw or paint a picture that conveys the meaning of those lines (also consider other art mediums, like collage).
Type a one page written explanation of your artwork. Your artwork must be at least the size of a half sheet of poster board
(although I would prefer it to take up an entire piece of poster board) and your written explanation must be included on a
separate sheet of paper (typed).
5) Another Artistic Interpretation- A statue of Juliet is mentioned at the end of the play. Quote the text that relates to
this. What in your opinion is the significance of the statue? Design and build it and explain your art piece. Write why you
chose to create the statue the way you did. You dont have to limit yourself to clay or papier-mch (although both are
wonderful mediums for this assignment). Use everyday items you find around the house. One mans junk is another
mans treasure!
6) Ten Years Later - Write a piece of short fiction in which you return to Verona, Italy ten years after the play ends. Try,
as best you can, to replicate the unique voices and personalities of the characters. You may set it in play format and use
Shakespearean style language and diction or you may chose to write it in a more modern format. Include the relevant
secondary characters. Requirements: 4 page story (double spaced) minimum, typed.
7) Romeos and/or Juliets Scrapbook - Compile a scrapbook of memorabilia that Romeo or Juliet might have collected
or come across during the play. Every artifact must be captioned with where he or she got it, its significance to her/him,
and the Act/Scene and lines you found it on. Think of the images that keep recurring in the novel, the places they go, and
anything she/he might collect (it could be something from a secondary character). This project will be assessed based on
the amount of memorabilia collected and its presentation. As a benchmark, expect to get at least ten pieces of memorabilia
for your scrapbook. You should include things from at least two other characters besides the protagonists. Requirements:
Scrapbook (presented as you see fit), 1-2 paragraphs about each item in scrapbook with explanation of each.
8) Rewrite the Ending - If you did not care for the way Romeo and Juliet ended; here is your opportunity to change it.
Rewrite a new ending to the play. Be sure to write in the style of the author (thats Shakespearean language, people!). Do
not explain how the ending should be changed. Write as if you were writing the story. On a separate page describe the
original ending and the changes you made and then explain why you made these changes. Requirements: A 3-4 page typed
paper that begins at some point AFTER Act III. You must also include a short explanation (8-10 sentences) of your
changes (on a separate sheet).
9) Photo essay - You will chose a theme or motif in Romeo and Juliet and take at least 15 black and white photos (or
color) that represent that theme. All photos must be accompanied by a 1 paragraph explanation of the theme or motif in
Romeo and Juliet. You must include at least one line from the play in each paragraph linking together your artistic
representation and Shakespeares play. Requirements: Your photos and 1 paragraph explanations can be laid out any way
you choose (poster board will probably be your best choice). A 1-page paper explaining your artistic decisions should also
accompany your project.
10) Act Out A Scene (5 people or fewer)You and your group members will choose a significant scene in the play from
the list below and act out this scene using the Shakespearean language, costumes, props and appropriate staging. You
must plan to video this and create an movie to be shown in class for your classmates. Your video should be between 8-10
minutes in length and demonstrate competent editing and professionalism.
Act I, Scene 1 (5 people)
Act 1, Scene 3 (3 people)
Act 1, Scene 5 (5 people)
Act 2, Scene 2 (2 people)
Act 2, Scene 3 (2 people)
Act 2, Scene 5 (2 people)
Act 3, Scene 1 (5 people)
Act 3, Scene 5 (3 people)
Act 4, Scene 3 (1 person)
Act 5, Scene 1 (2 people)
Act 5, Scene 3 (5 people)
