Philippe Bernard

Senior at Tech Boston Academy

2014 summer job placement: Blue Hills Boys & Girls Club
Philippe (Phil) Bernard is a hardworking and motivated senior at TechBoston Academy who started
working with his PIC Career Specialist at the beginning of his junior year in order to secure a summer
job. Last April, he participated in the 2014 Teen Leadership Institute at Hale Reservation. Although Phil
grew up taking care of his many siblings, the training at Hale really opened his eyes to how much
children look up to adults and mimic the behavior to which they are exposed. Phil also participated in
CPR training from the American Heart Association and financial literacy training from Bank of America.
Using the skills he gained at the Teen Leadership Institute, Phil landed a job at the Blue Hills Boys & Girls
Club with wages sponsored by Bank of America. He assisted the teachers in supervising children during
activities, chaperoning field trips, and organizing the activity area. Phil met with his supervisor at the
beginning and at the end of the summer to fill out a MA Work-Based Learning Plan. He received the
highest rating possible (5 out of 5) for his work ethic, professionalism, communication, and
interpersonal skills. Phils supervisor highlighted that he was a team-player and was self-motivated, able
to come up with age-appropriate activities for the children without being asked.
Following an enriching summer, Phils Career Specialist recommended that he take the test to become a
cashier at Home Depot. He passed with high marks one of the only students to do so. Phil works on
Saturdays and Sundays at the Home Depot in Watertown, and has already won several customer service
awards for his outstanding work ethic. He is also currently looking for an afterschool job closer to
downtown Boston.
On top of his school and job responsibilities, Phil finds time to serve as the captain of his baseball team
and to volunteer as a babysitter and tutor. He plans to go to college next year and major in psychology
and minor in sports management.
