Objectives for Level 4

Level 4: High intermediate level


Reading Skills:
Upon completing the Level 4 of the IELP, students will be able to:
o Comprehend longer and more conceptually complicated articles
and essays from a variety of sources by answering questions
posed to them with 80% accuracy.
o Summarize the reading selection with 80% accuracy.
o Synthesize information from various texts.
o Given two or more reading selections, identify divergent points of
view on the same subject with their supporting reasons.
o Comprehend short stories by answering questions on them with
80% accuracy.
o Differentiate between literal and figurative language with 80%
accuracy.
o Support personal opinions using examples from the text.
o Use context clues to find a words meaning.
o Learn and use important basic every day and academic vocabulary.
Students will study a minimum of 150 new vocabulary words, in
addition to others that will be discussed in class.
o Use different grammatical structures such as conditionals, adjective
clauses, perfect verb tenses, with 70% accuracy.
o Identify inferences made by the author.
Writing Skills:
o Use a graphic organizer to organize the ideas in an essay
o Write outlines of the reading selection including the authors thesis
and main ideas with 80% accuracy.
o Write different types of academic essays (at least 5 paragraphs:
introduction, three body paragraphs, conclusion paragraph) such as
synthesis papers; summaries; compare and contrast papers; cause
and effect papers; response papers; opinion essays, etc.
o Prepare typed written work following the MLA Style format.
o Write grammatically correct sentences and questions. Among
others:
With correct subject-verb agreement
With correct pronoun usage

Using conditionals
Using different verb tenses

Speaking and Listening Comprehension Skills:


Upon completion of Level 4 in the IELP, students will be able to:
o Identifying direct and indirect speech
o Recognize speakers attitudes and feelings by identifying their tone
with 80% accuracy.
o Listen for specific information and answer questions posed to them
about what they heard with 80% accuracy.
o Clearly form and express their opinion about a subject.
o Define and use important basic every day and academic
vocabulary. Students will study a minimum of 150 new vocabulary
words, in addition to others that will be discussed in class.
o Take dictations, with 80% accuracy, in order to sharpen their
listening skills
o Interrupt conversations in a polite way.
o Use gambits for different purposes such as hesitating before
answering a question, to express frustration, to call attention to a
particular item, etc.
o Clarify or confirm information when asked.

Pronunciation:
Upon completion of Level 4, students should be able to:
o Produce the sounds, rhythm and intonation patterns of American
English by imitating voice selections they hear with 80% accuracy.
o Produce the jump-up/step-down intonation pattern of American
English.

Speech Communication skills:


Upon completion of the Speech Communication class, the students will be
able to:
o Present short oral presentations that are easy to understand and
follow.
o Use appropriate posture and body movements in giving speeches
(body language, gestures, etc.)
o Enunciate clearly and project their voice so that an audience can
hear them well.
o Approximate native-like pronunciation when giving their
presentations.
o Use various forms of visual aids in giving oral presentations
o Use the following elements of public speaking adequately:
Power Point or other media presentation format

Importance of dress etiquette


Use of index cards
Preparing a speech outline and handout
Appropriate non-verbal communication during speeches (be
acquainted with unacceptable non-verbal mannerisms).
