Cognitive Level(s) of Lesson:

Objective:
Learning: Students will be able to find the Arrow Rule in Frame-and-Arrow problems to practice
finding unknown numbers in subtraction.
Behavior: by completing Frame-and-Arrow worksheet based on student ability.
Condition: students will achieve this with a combination of teacher demonstration, student
interaction, and SMARTboard lesson.
NJCCCS addressed:
1.OA.6, 1.OA.8, 1.OA.5, 1.OA.6, 1.NBT.1
Instructional Strategies:
Opening:
-Daily routines (calendar, weather, straws, slate, coins, tallies, November words).
-Mental Math Fluency- students will count by twos and fives.
-Teacher will recall previous counting knowledge using Frame-and-Arrow addition problems.
-State or write objective- students will find the Arrow Rule in Frame-and-Arrow problems to practice
finding an unknown number in subtraction.
Presentation:
-Teacher will display on the SMARTboard a Frame-and-Arrow problem counting back by ones.
-Teacher will ask students to be Math Detectives and help solve the Frame-and-Arrow problem.
-Teacher will ask students What is the first step Math Detectives use to solve Frame-and-Arrow
problems? Anticipatory Response You need to look at the rule.
-Teacher will ask students What is the second step a Math Detective uses to solve Frame-and-Arrow
problems? Anticipatory Response Look at the arrows.

-Teacher will ask students What is the third step Math Detectives use to solve Frame-and-Arrow
problems? Anticipatory Response Look at the frames.
-Teacher will display on the SMARTboard a Frame-and-Arrow problem counting back by twos.
-Teacher will ask students to help solve the problem.
-Teacher will display a problem with the rule missing and will model how to find the missing rule.
-Teacher will present one at a time, four additional Frame-and-Arrow problems with a missing rule.
-After each individual problem is displayed on the SMARTboard, teacher will ask students to help
find the missing rule.
-Teacher will ask students to explain, How they know what the rule is?
Guided Practice:
Students will be placed in groups based on ability.
Students will be given a Frame-and-Arrow worksheet based on student ability to practice finding
missing rule.
Students may ask peers within their group for assistance.
Teacher will tell students that they can use their number lines and 200 charts as tools to help solve the
problems.
Closure:
Teacher will give students an exit slip with Frame-and-Arrow problem, which students will solve
individually.
Assessment:
Formative:
Teacher observation, class discussion, teacher walking around the room during guided practice.
Individual Measurability:
Teacher will take notes while students are working during guided practice.
