1. Content and Standards:

CC.2.2.2.A.1: Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction within
100.

2. Prerequisites:

Students should understand place value, properties of operations and be able to add and
subtract two and three digit numbers. Students should be able to make sense of complex
word problems and determine when to use addition or subtraction to solve them.

3. Essential Questions:

● What are the comparison bars?


● How do I use comparison bars?
● Do I need to add or subtract?

4. Materials and Equipment:

● Computer/Chromebook: Students and teachers will use these to access the


teaching and learning platforms, as well as to access zoom.
● Math workbook: Students will use their worksheets to view the problems, work
through them, and show their work. Teacher will use it to model the example
problems.
● Paper: Students will use this as scratch paper to write their work, or to complete
the problems.
● Pencil: Students will use a pencil to write down their work.
● White board: Students may use this to write down their work.
● Dry erase marker: Students can use this to write on their white boards.

5. Instructional Objective*:

Students will know how to identify the “compare” word problems in math and be able to
represent and solve them.

6. Instructional Procedures:
Before:
1. Teacher will introduce the lesson, “Today we are going to take a look at compare
word problems.”
a. Students will be asked to get out their necessary materials.
2. Teacher will review the steps for using comparison bars in math.
a. Teacher will model the examples.
3. Teacher will model the first four problems using the comparison bars on the
worksheet.
a. Students may be called upon to assist the teacher in solving them.
During:
1. Students will be asked to complete the three problems on the next page
independently.
a. Teacher will walk around and assist as needed both in the classroom and
on zoom.
After:
1. Students will be asked to reconvene as a whole group to discuss the problems.
a. Students will be called upon to share their answers with the class.

7. Assessment:

I will assess the student’s understanding and meeting of the objective based on their work
shown on their worksheets and their answers.

8. Differentiated Instruction:

Students who require extra support may meet with the teacher one on one during the
allotted enrichment time. Students who are advanced, may continue onto their XtraMath
activities to start enrichment time.
