Fieldtrip Reflection
30 March 2014
Reflection of Fieldtrip

Developmental stages of the fieldtrip:

a. Planning (Pre-Fieldtrip):
1. Research on Laws/policies
This is when I researched Indonesian laws and regulations/policies in relation to tin
mining. This is where I got the documents from civics class to refer and use. I later
formulated my questions for interview/survey for the various occasions and people in
Bankga and Belitung.
2. Task Distribution amongst group
This is when I distributed the tasks to do before and after fieldtrip to my partner
(Ryuta), which I followed. Sometimes there were times where my partner didnt do a
lot, but I still compensated it by working on it by myself.
3. Questions to ask
This is when I made the survey/interview Questions based on the rules and
regulations of mining tin. There were various groups of questions for various
occasions and people, like for the Museum of Tin, Pt. ATD Makmur Mandiri Tin
Company, The Catholic Hospital/Puskesmas (Pusat Kesehatan Masyarakat),
Government Office (PEMDA) and Local tin miners.
b. Preparation:
1. Briefings
This is when I listened about the briefing given by the supervisors about various
things like the hotel, places we are going to visit and see, roommates, precautions and
warnings along with the consequences so we wont do things that are illegal.
a. Roommates, Hotel and places we are going to visit
I got briefings of the roommates that we are going to stay with, our hotel and
its facilities and the places we are going to visit in the fieldtrip.
b. Precautions, Dangers
I also got precautions of what could happen if something goes wrong and
dangers of what not to do in the fieldtrip. This will help and guide us to a safe
path
c. Warnings and Consequences

Anand 2
In the end we also got briefed about the warnings and consequences if
something unexpected/bad happen in the fieldtrip. This is to make us
disciplined and orderly
2. Deeper Task given
I also got a more detailed and accurate explanation of the tasks and what we need to
do in the fieldtrip, that will contribute to what we will do after the fieldtrip ends (like
the movie, narrative script, reflection).
c. Visit: (Collection of Data from Different Places)
The places I visited and collected different perspectives and types of information from are:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
8.
9.

Museum of literacy
School of Laskar Pelangi
Island Hopping
Pak. Ahoks residence
Museum of Tin
Pt. ATD Makmur Mandiri Tin Company
Catholic Hospital (Puskesmas)
Government office (PEMDA)
Local Tin Miners

Even though few of the places I visited werent connected to our project, I got the
introduction for my movie from those places. Plus, they were useful in their own ways like
after I went to the Museum of Literacy, I was able to understand the level of Literacy and
education in the area. This later filled in the missing gaps, because the post-teens in the area
could earn money for their family rather than education. So many school buildings werent
present and the museum of literacy and school of Laskar Pelangi proved the effort and
struggle of the students striving to learn, even in adequate facilities.
d. Reflection (Post-Fieldtrip):
1. Reflect on past experience
In the post-fieldtrip stage I reflected on the past (fieldtrip) and every events that
happened. I reflected on what the limitations and benefits are and also my experience
in the fieldtrip.
2. Collect and Sort Data
I also collected the data (like the recordings and pictures) to formulate the narrative
script and the movie.

Evaluation of the limitation of the stages of IDU at each situation (decide situations
we will be dealing with)

Anand 3
The limitations of these stages of IDU at each situation are limited compared to the
benefits. Firstly, in the planning process we had sufficient research of the laws and policies,
which could be applied in the fieldtrip. It would have been better if we had more research and
known the laws more accurately to format our questions accordingly to the interviewees
level of understanding (we could have interviewed them with more complex questions of the
law to receive a better understanding. Secondly, for the preparation stage we had planned the
questions similarly. This made us ask similar questions, which wasted time, and in that time
we could have asked a variety of different questions. To improve, we could have formulated
the questions together so we could generate varieties of questions, which are different from
one another. Thirdly, there was not much limitation for the visit part except for one aspect of
our visit. Our plans were altered and we didnt visit all the places we intended to visit. To
improve this, we should have been ready and expect the unexpected. Finally, in the postfieldtrip stage we had one major limitation, which was that we didnt get the accurate
statistics of the number of death rates and infant mortality rate.

Evaluate the benefits of the stages of IDU at each situation (decide situations we will
be dealing with)
The benefits of the stages IDU are innumerable. Firstly, our planning was excellent

and we got a brief insight on what we are going to do and what we need to prepare. This brief
insight prepared us very well for our next stage of IDU (preparation). In addition we made
interview questions, which were very useful for our third stage of IDU (visit). Secondly, our
preparation stage was very necessary and we got a deeper insight and a kick-off to our next
stage of IDU (visit). We learned the safety and precautions, which were useful for use when
we visit Bangka-Belitung. Thirdly, the stage of visit was superb and very interactive. We
learned many informative things in a fun and interactive way. We interacted with the expert
face-to-face and got first-hand knowledge. Finally, our reflection stage was very important
and essential. We reflected on what we could have done better and what we could keep up
with. This will prepare us and help us improve our upcoming fieldtrip and daily life (planning
for vacations).
Experience:
My experience in the fieldtrip was spectacular and fantastic. I enjoyed the whole
fieldtrip experience and the process of it along with the IDU stages. This fieldtrip was

balanced and had the fun and fact together, interconnected. In the planning stage I planned
and wrote questions to ask in the fieldtrip. In the preparation stage I got a deeper insight of
the fieldtrip and I also decided the packing and information gathering method. In the visit
stage I went to every place mentioned above (in the list) and collected qualitative data from
experts. Finally, for my reflection/post-fieldtrip stage I reflected on the pros and cons to get a
better advice and lesson for the upcoming event in the near future.
