What is the difference between the Centennial Accord and the Boldt decision? How are
they similar?
The Boldt decision and the Centennial Accord were both important acts that
helped with the Native American civil rights movement. For example, according to Rob
Carson of The News Tribune, the Boldt decisions ruling was stunning. Judge Boldt took
the phrase in the treaty that said in common with and interpreted it as the Native
Americans got 50% of the harvestable catch. For the sports and commercial fisherman,
the ruling was a bombshell, and they lost most of their business. Most of them didn't
follow the law, and Washington State didn't enforce them. For the Native Americans,
they were happy that they got some of the fish back, but they wanted all the fish. They
were also very upset because the non-native fishermen weren't respecting their rights.
This explains why there was a lot of anger towards the Native Americans, but it also
explains why the Native Americans protested for their rights. Another example from the
Governors Office of Indian Affairs, says that the accord was between the federally
recognized Indian tribes of Washington, and the State of Washington. It says that the
accord provides a framework for the government-to-government relationship and
implementation procedures to assure execution of that relationship. It also says that the
Washington State government will respect the sovereignty of the Native Americans. As
you can see, even after the Boldt decision, the Native Americans rights and sovereignty
was not being respected. This is why the Centennial Accord was an agreement saying
that the Washington States government and the Native Americans government will
work together. From my brief research, Ive concluded that the Boldt decision, and its
reactions led to the Centennial Accord. The Boldt decision was the first step to getting
their rights back, but the Centennial Accord said that the Washington's state government
would really respect the sovereignty of the Native Americans. The difference between
these two acts we're that Washington didn't acknowledge the decision or law, they just
did what they wanted too, without thinking about the Native Americans. The accord
acknowledged the Native Americans, and decided to work together. This is how the
Boldt decision and the Centennial Accord were both important acts in getting the Native
Americans rights back.
Best Informative Piece:

I chose my Native American Inquiry Project Paragraph as my best informative

piece. I chose this and it made me proud because I worked really hard on this project,
and this paragraph summarized my findings. It was a piece to inform the reader about
the Boldt decision and the Centennial Accord and how they are connected. The
feedback that I received was that I got 100%. This made me even more proud and this
is evidence that I became more awesome. I also grew by acquiring more skills of how to
inform someone by using evidence and reasoning.
