Build a Sustainable City!

Mayors wanted!
Electrocity is an online game that
has been developed specifically for
teachers and students. Students
build and manage their own virtual
towns and cities, making important
decisions and learning about energy
generation, environmental
management and many more practical
and relevant concepts. There is plenty
of real-world information built into the
game and students can put that
information to good use in their own
cities.
There are several goals that are to
be achieved:
getting an A rating for
Environmental Impact Category
at least 80,000 in the population
of the city
keep the citizens in your city
happy
To get the highest score you
have to play the game in a balanced
and realistic way.
Electrocity allows players to
create their own city and consider the
pros and cons of different approaches
to energy and the effects it has on the
environment. Electrocity is all about
balance and planning. There are four
categories to balance when planning
your city
1. Popularity (how happy your
citizens are)
2. Population
3. Environmental Impact
4. Security of Energy Supply
(avoiding blackouts!)

Students will need to listen to the

citizens, provide jobs and electricity,
balance self-sufficiency with
cooperation, maintain a healthy cash
flow and care for the environment.
The culminating task hits all three
of our STSE expectations:
analyze immediate and longterm effects of energy and resource
use on society and the environment,
evaluate options for conserving
energy and resources
investigate energy
transformation and conservation
demonstrate an understanding
of the various forms and sources of
energy and the ways in which
energy can be transformed and
conserved
To achieve a level 4 on the
Electrocity rubric, students will be
expected to achieve various targets.
Students will also have to explain
some of the key stages to their city or
towns development in a written
reflection (ie. Why did you choose to
build a geothermal plant over a coalrun plant?).
In the end, it is up to the students to
be accountable Mayors in their cities!
Maybe they will build it up into a huge
metropolis of grateful millions or
maybe they will bankrupt the town
and turn its rivers to sludge.
It is up to the students to
succeed!
