ECO CITY PROJECT

OBJECTIVES: Creating an eco-friendly city is a complex and multifaceted endeavor that

involves various aspects of urban planning, sustainability and environmental responsibility. At
the end of this activity the student must be able to:
a) design and develop an Eco city;
b) promote energy conservation and reduce reliance on fossil fuels; and
c) enforce eco-friendly policies and regulations that support the city’s sustainability goals.

WHY ARE WE DOING THIS? Eco cities are, “Cities that encourage and provide for the most
sustainable lifestyles. They have an active approach towards addressing climate change and
being environmentally friendly.” As concerns of climate change continue to rise, the importance
of cities adapting features of a green city rise as well. Here we challenge you to try and redesign
your city to try and fit all or most of the components of an eco-city.

PROCEDURES:
1. Research some aspects of eco-city or green cities around the world.
a) What cities are considered greenest in the world? Why?
In a blog post from The Wander Club, it is noted that Stockholm, Copenhagen,
Vienna, Sao Paulo, Munich, and Washington, DC stand out as some of the world’s
greenest cities. This is mainly because these cities prioritize sustainability with extensive
green spaces, efficient public transportation, and eco-friendly policies. Stockholm,
Sweden boasts green initiatives; Copenhagen, Denmark is known for its cycling culture
and wind power; Vienna, Austria emphasizes green urban planning; Sao Paulo, Brazil
focuses on reforestation projects; Munich, Germany values renewable energy, and;
Washington, DC promotes bike-friendly infrastructure and green building practices.
These efforts enhance air quality, reduce carbon footprints, and create healthier living
environments.
b) What designs of these green cities do you want to include in your design?
We have decided on 3 major designs/additions to our city and these are solar panels,
windmills, and cars powered by electricity. Solar panels are placed on top of buildings to
minimize the space used in the entire city, placing solar panels in places that not most
people venture into promotes an excellent way of using space within the city. Solar
panels help generate electricity with the use of the radiation from the sun (solar energy).
Windmills are also part of our city for generating electricity. We also included cars
powered by electricity because this promotes less pollution as the cars don't carry engine
and doesn't require gas to function, it is also be beneficial as gas prices have risen in the
past few years. Green spaces are also introduced in the design to have a glimpse of nature
even in this advancing world. Lastly, we will also add bicycles to promote an eco-friendly
way of transportation, they don't only serve as user-friendly transportation but also
environmental-friendly.

2. With your group, try to design a city that has features of a green city or eco city.
c. How long do you think it will take to transform the city?
After carefully planning, and gathering enough materials of our miniature eco-
city, it can be done in one month with the help of teamwork and time-management. When
it comes to transforming the miniature into a real-life eco-city, the estimated year for
finishing it might take 10 years due to its wide range area, complex buildings and etc.
However, in order to successfully finish the city, there must be enough man power to do
the labor.

d. What kinds of features will be present in your design?

In our design, we have a green space since this has the ability to absorb carbon
dioxide and release oxygen to reduce the effects of climate change. Windmill is one of
the features in our design since this provide electricity without burning any fuel or
polluting the air. Electric vehicles are also included in our design since electric cars
produce no carbon dioxide or other harmful emission when driving. On the Apartment
Complex, each apartment is composed of solar panels and plants, which helps the city
reduce carbon dioxide, while the hall is used by the government of a city. We also include
road signs to provide valuable information to drivers. and lastly, the pond, this can be the
source of the plants when there is no rain to prevent the plants from drying, and also to
maintain the health of the plants that give us oxygen.
e. Who will fund the redesigning of your city?
In the miniature, the fund will come from the whole group depending on
whether we should buy other materials that is needed for more decorations but
mostly of the materials that we used are recycled so that we can save money as
much as possible. When it comes to creating our miniature city into reality,
funding for creating an eco-city can come from various sources, including
government entities, private investors, international organizations, and public-
private partnerships. The specific amount and funding sources depend on the
location, scale, and vision of the eco city project. Large-scale eco city projects can
cost billions of dollars to develop, it's essential to conduct a detailed study and
cost analysis based on the specific requirements of the eco city we have in mind.

f. What problems might arise with changing up some long-held characteristics of

the city?
Eco cities are beneficial for sustainable living, but they can also pose
challenges, such as a high cost of living. It's like investing more in sustainable
amenities and practices, potentially impacting expenses compared to traditional
urban areas. Another challenge is that eco cities deal with technical obstacles, like
creating eco-friendly technologies, ensuring they can grow as needed, and making
sure they work well together. Overcoming these challenges is crucial to ensuring
that the sophisticated systems in these cities genuinely contribute to the
environment as intended. The final challenge involves finding the right balance
between the positive environmental impact of eco cities and their economic
feasibility. It's like walking a tightrope, we need both sustainability and economic
viability to ensure the success of these city projects in the long run.

g. How do you plan to address those challenges?

1. Economic Disruptions: Changes in long-standing would affect local economies,

property values, and operating businesses. This could lead to disruptions and financial
difficulties for businesses.

Solution: Economic Transition Support

Provide support services to help people and businesses adjust to the changing
environment, such as financial aid, tax breaks, and retraining programs. This helps the
community to build economic resilience and lessen the impact economic changes.
2. Infrastructure and Logistics Difficulties: Changing long-held characteristics
traits may require big changes to public services, transportation networks, and
infrastructure, which could provide operational and logistical issues.

Solution: Investment in infrastructure and strategic planning

Development plans and investments in dependable infrastructure can help the city
adapt to its changing needs. Such as using green cars and green infrastructure that can
be powered by renewable energy sources like solar or wind energy.

3. Think through the possible objections about your design that someone could have and
how you would answer them.

a) How would you integrate eco-friendly design with existing infrastructure,

especially in densely populated urban areas where retrofitting can be challenging
and disruptive?
To integrate eco-friendly design with existing infrastructure, we could repurpose
and improve buildings, such as apartment complexes, by breaking down eco-friendly
plans for easy and gradual implementation. For example, placing a solar panel in each
apartment or adding plants to every window can be implemented over time. This
approach, instead of wide-range implementation, helps residents avoid disturbances.
Another way to integrate eco-friendly design into infrastructure is by encouraging
property owners to participate in eco-friendly initiatives. Encouraging property owners to
participate in eco-friendly initiatives promotes environmental conservation, resource
efficiency, cost savings, community well-being, compliance with regulations, and
education, fostering a more sustainable and responsible living environment.

b) Does the design of the eco city include a thorough mobility strategy that
emphasizes the promotion of environmentally friendly modes of transportation
and the reduction of carbon emissions?
Yes, while the eco city's conceptual design prioritizes ecologically favorable
modes, it also contains an emphasis on eco-friendly means of transportation such as
electric public buses, taxis, and so on that may be used for public transit. The release of
greenhouse gases (carbon emissions) can be lowered with the implementation of these
electric-powered means of transportation. Additionally, there will be pedestrian-friendly
lanes and bike lanes to assist both residents and visitors alike.
c) Do you think that adding a touch of realism will make your eco city design more
appealing??
Yes, we do believe that adding a touch of realism to our design would make it
more appealing, why? Because when people see our design for the eco city, they are
given the exact imagery of what they could expect. And that is why we made a
functioning water fountain and all the other realistic features not just for the aesthetics but
because we wanted it to be as immersive as possible for everyone that would see our
design.
d) How about the waste management of the eco city?
The plastic wastes that will be collected in the city will use the waste compaction
method where the plastics will be pressed into a shape to form a usable products like
chairs, table, and other furniture that are made of plastics. On the other hand,
biodegradable wastes can be used for composting and also fertilizers for the food bearing
trees and plants.

4. Share with the other group and see if you can convince them that your group redesigned
city best embodies the goals and has all the necessary features of green cities.
