Schools, Prisons, and social implications of Punishment Rethinking

Disciplinary Practices
4/2/15
Theres a prison cell in San Quentin waiting for him
Wow. The horrible thoughts that ran through my mind as I read this
statement made by an assistant principal. How could anyone make this
judgment about a student is ridicules. I think its peoples out look and
attitude towards a student that directs a student down a negative path.
Yes! What is the school doing to prevent him in ending up in prison?
Perfect response, I feel it is the schools responsibility to help prevent that.
Dont connect education to punishment
A student does something wrong some teachers automatically use education
as a form of disciple. For an example if a student is misbehaving in class a
teacher might assign that student an essay to write about some random
mind numbing topic. Big negative.
We spoke in class about limiting write ups or any sort of disciplinary action
to major offenses such as students brining drugs alcohol, weapons to school
or any violent behavior. I agree with this because although a maybe talking
or disrupting the classroom the student is till going to be apart of the class
I often said upon entering the education program,l if a student is
continuously disruptive in my class or talks back to be that student will
simply receive a please leave my class and the student will be out for the
rest of the class period. However from my growth in the education program I
realize that I would never discipline my students in this manner. I chose this
area to educate and to get students to see the connection between
education and real world. Removing a student from the classroom I am doing
the exact opposite of what I have set out for myself.
We often talk about suspending judgment, however from what I have seen
this can be more easily said then done after years of experience. What are
some ways in which you can prevent this from happening?
