Background
In1910SouthAfricabecameaunitednation,
andin1912formstheAfricanNational
Congress(ANC).In1948theNationalParty
comestopower,andwithitcomesApartheid,
orsegregationofblacksandwhites.In1994,
SouthAfricaholdsitsfirstuniversalelections,
andNelsonMandelabecomespresident,ending
Apartheid.

ThreeTieredSystem
MuchlikeintheUnitedStates,SouthAfricaisa
constitutionaldemocracy.Ithasathreetiered
systemofgovernmentthatconsistsofalegislative
branch,ajudicialbranch,andanexecutive
branch.Itslegislativebranchisgovernedbya
parliamentthatconsistsoftheNationalAssembly
andtheNationalCouncilofProvinces.Inits
judicialbranchresidetheConstitutionalCourt,
theSupremeCourtofAppeal,andtheHighCourt.
Lastly,theexecutivebranchfeaturesthePresident
ofSouthAfrica.

ThePresident
ThePresidentofSouthAfricaiselectedby
theNationalAssembly,andcanserveupto
twofiveyearterms.Thefirstpresidenttobe
electedunderanonracialelectionwasNelson
Mandela,andJacobZumaisthecurrent
PresidentofSouthAfrica.
