Lesson: Study Skill Mark It Up

Lesson Objective: For students to obtain or refine the study skill of Mark It
Up. Students will be able to highlight important things, cross out interesting
facts, and write thoughts down in informational text.
Materials:
- Informational text (11 copies)
- Highlighters and pencils
- Whiteboard
Lesson Opening:
1) Transition students into the classroom How was your weekend?
2) Purpose of the lesson is to give you all a new study skill (or refresh one
you may already have) to help this class be more productive for you
Procedures:
1) Were going to start today off a little different. Im just going to review
a study tool Ive used a lot over the past few years: Mark It Up
a. Students probably have an idea of what it is already, but I want
them to work with me on this
2) Review difference between interesting and important facts jot
student thoughts on the whiteboard on chart
3) We can use tools to differentiate between these two in our text, notes,
etc.
a. What do you think we could highlight? important
b. How could we eliminate distraction of the things that are just
interesting? cross them out lightly
c. If were working in our notes, what might we do in the margins?
Things weve been told will be tested, star very important facts
4) Practice with a small article Students need to highlight, cross out, and
write down at least one thing
a. students share out what they highlighted, crossed out, and wrote
