SafePlace
Our primary collaborator and beneficiary will be
SafePlace, an Austin organization that provides services for
those that have faced domestic or sexual assault. Through
safety, healing, prevention and social change, SafePlace
works to end domestic violence and assist those who have
been affected by it.
SafePlace provides a secure, healing facility at the
Kelley White Emergency Shelter. This building allows people
or families who do not feel safe in their own home to safely
reside and heal through therapy, arts, and recreational
activities.

Possible Collaborator
We considered working with The Settlement Home for Children in order to
benefit those involved in the foster care system. Davy Garcias experience
taught us the effects that music and musical instruments have on those forcibly
separated from their homes. However, we ultimately decided to work with
SafePlace due to the fact that Barri Rosenbluth, the Expect Respect Program
Director of the organization, is a family friend of Joseph Griesels family.
Through SafePlace, we have gotten in contact with Ms. Rosenbluth and
Melinda Cantu, the Senior Director for Residential Services, and are currently in
communication discussing the logistics of our plan.

Stakeholders
Frog Music Licensing
Frog Music Licensing is a small, locally based, Austin
company that works exclusively with Austin artists and
bands.
By reaching out to Thomas Vale, the owner of the
company, we can:
1. Get in contact with local Artist
2. Ask for donations at a SXSW show
. By getting a locally based Austin company to help, we can
establish a connection between local artists and
SafePlace.
. Tim has worked with Frog Music Licensing in the past.

Stakeholders
Strait Music
As an Austin landmark and musical Mecca, Strait
Music would be a fantastic potential partner.
History of involvement with children and music through
sharing a building with Austin School of Music
Dedicated keyboards department
Dedicated percussion/band instruments department
Cost-effective repairs
Has supported Austin High Band in the past through
Durands
*Other various music stores are still viable options.
Strait is well established, and locally owned.

Option 1 - Concert at SafePlace

We would hold a concert featuring local musicians at SafePlace. The event
would be publicized to draw out students, family, and other members of the
community to the event in order to educate people about SafePlace and our
mission to introduce instruments, inviting them to donate for the cause.
Furthermore, the music would serve as a show for those residing at the shelter,
immediately improving their quality of life.

Option 2 - Fundraiser/ Donation Drive

Without spreading ourselves too thin, a fundraiser and donation drive can be
held at Austin High, a music store, and SXSW during Spring Break. This can
allow people to get the message of what SafePlace is about, why it is important,
and how individuals can help. By asking for donations, this can also give us a
chance to reach out to the people actually giving money, or instruments. When
we send off a letter, or talk to people in person, it gives us a chance to make a
personal connection, and hopefully establishing a positive relationship with the
potential sponsor.

Option 2- Pros and Cons

Pros
Great way to get many people
involved
Students are involved
Austinites involved
Music lovers involved
Businesses can help support a
locally run shelter

Cons
If we plan to do a SXSW show,
weather could take away an
opportunity for fundraising
We might not get enough funds to
buy instruments
Possible inefficient use of funds

Our Course of Action

Our group plans to execute our second option of a fundraiser/donation drive.
However, wed also like to incorporate the concert element of our first option
into our plan, but heavily scaled back. Instead of holding a public concert, we
plan on having at least one artist, or the Austin High Jazz band, play a small
setlist of songs for the people at SafePlace. Logistically this seems possible
and effective to help the people at SafePlace have a better healing experience.
Hopefully, this will also help establish relationships between musicians, music
stores, and other various shelters that could be in need of advocation, and
resources.
