Black History Month Editorial
Unit 4: Change
Task: There has been some debate over whether or not Black History
Month should be honored. Arguments can be made on both sides of
the issue. Take a look at the quotes below. You have the opportunity to
effectively communicate your opinion on this issue by writing an
editorial article. You will need to support your claim with at least three
valid reasons. These should be rooted in the Civil Rights Movement and
content we have covered in class. Your editorial is due, Friday,
February 6th.
It is nonsense to devote a separate month to a conjoined history. The
best method of teaching history is to teach it as a chronological,
inclusive story, not as segmented parts, divisible for monthly
discussion.
Although this month was mainly established to celebrate and honor
the work of African Americans, it signifies unity and recognition cutting
across racial and geographical barriers.
