Introduction:
About Landline:
A landline is a
optical fibre.
telephone line
wire
or
airwaves. Landlines usually cost less than cellular lines and provide better voice quality,
and are used when there is no need for mobility or where cellular service is unavailable.
A land line is also used to increase the security of communications, as it cannot be
intercepted by a receiver without physical access to the line.
The term landline is also used to describe a connection between two or more points that
consists of a dedicated physical cable, as opposed to an always-available private link that
is actually implemented as a circuit in a wider switched system.
The implication of a landline in this context is one of security and especially of
survivability.

The paper, as it unfolds, is divided into six sections. Section 1 gives a brief
account of the era of competition that was heralded in Indian telecom sector and
the results achieved. Analysis of the results, particularly comparison with other
major countries intrigued further discussions on economic structure, synergy
between telecom and IT, competition policy and technology in sections 2, 3.4 and
5 respectively. Logical extension of the arguments, as they developed, extended
to a vision for 2020 in each of these sections.

Page 10
VISION:
Vision 2020 is a vision of information society and knowledge economy built on the
edifice of ICT. In India, the aggressive expansion of public sector telecommunications
infrastructure in hitherto uncharted territories of geographically remote locations would
unleash latent economic energies and market forces, which will erode the very foundation
of perceived lack of profitability of rural investment among the private investors. Once
this is achieved, Vision 2020 will be a vision of wealthier and more equal society full of
creativity,
innovation
Babasabpatilfreepptmba.com
and
competition.
Page 11
India, like many other countries of the world, have adopted a gradual approach to
telecom sector reform through selective privatization and managed competition in
different segments of the telecom market. To begin with, India introduced private
competition in value-added services in 1992 followed by opening up of cellular
and basic services for local area to private competition. The Telecom Regulatory
Authority of India (TRAI) was constituted in 1997 as an independent regulator in
this sector. Competition was also introduced in national long distance (NLD) and
international long distance (ILD) telephony at the start of the current decade.
The current policy stance affecting telecom sector in India is presented in the
Appendix. Two state-owned public sector incumbents with a large existing
subscriber base dominate the fixed line service. As on December 31, 2001, the
two Public Sector Enterprises (PSEs), BSNL and MTNL2 owned 34.73 million
Direct Exchange Lines (DELs) against 0.45 million privately owned DELs. These
two PSEs were allowed belated entry into the cellular segment in the beginning
of the present decade. Consequently, their cellular subscriber base is tiny
compared to the private operators. Out of 7.3 million cellular subscribers in the
country

AirTel Becomes The First GSM Operator In The Country To Cross The 10 MillionCustomer Milestone.
One In Every Four GSM Mobile Users in The Country Is An AirTel Customer
.Celebrates by launching the AirTel mobile service in Bihar, the 21st telecom circle to be
launched.
AirTel, Indias leading mobile service today created history by becoming the first GSM
operator in India to cross the coveted 10 million-customer marks. To celebrate the
milestone, AirTel announced the launch of its mobile services in Bihar. In-addition,
company would also launch its services in Jharkhand. The launch in the twin states would
mark the expansion of AirTel mobile services footprint in 21 out of the 23-telecom
circles in the country. Taking the momentum forward, AirTel is also gearing up to launch
its mobile services in Assam and North East by the end of this current fiscal. The
company is thus all set to acquire an All India footprint.
According to Mr. Sunil Mittal, Chairman & Managing Director, and Bharti
Enterprises Crossing the 10 million customer milestone has been a remarkable
achievement by AirTel. It is clearly the fastest growth achieved by any GSM service
provider in the country. The milestone is also a celebration for the entire Indian mobile
industry, which has shown tremendous resilience over the last decade. To mark the
occasion I am very happy to launch the AirTel mobile service in Bihar. The 10 million
mark reflects the level of trust & confidence enjoyed by the AirTel brand, nationally. The
credit for this feat clearly goes to all stakeholders including customers and channels
partners. Having achieved so much in so little time, gives us renewed energy to double
customer base in a much shorter time.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY:
For the purpose of research study the data from two sources has been collected mainly,
1) Primary Data.
2) Secondary Data.
Primary Data
It is the original source of data collected by the researcher. In this study primary
source of data collection was carried out using a structured Questionnaire. Primary
data was collected from 300 respondents in BELGAUM City. The respondents were
met, and the data was collected by
personal interview,
Structured Questionnaire.
General observation.
Face to Face interaction.
Secondary Data
The researcher uses already collected data; it is called as secondary source.
The major sources of secondary data are as follows:
Collected through Internet.
News papers and Magazines
.
Babasabpatilfreepptmba.com
Page 31
Research Approach:
Survey method was used for carrying out the research. The survey was conducted for
2 weeks. The respondents were met directly and asked questions. The collected
information was recorded in the questionnaire. The fieldwork provides various
information about the problem under consideration.
Measurement Techniques:
Measurement may be defined as the assignment of numbers to characteristics of
objects, persons, states or events, according to rules.
Some of the measurement techniques used are:
Questionnaire
It represents the most common form of measurement for eliciting information. As
much its function is measurement.
The Questionnaire designed included Open ended questions, Multiple-Choice
questions, and Dichotomous questions.
Open-ended question
These questions leave the respondents free to offer, any replies that seem appropriate
in light of the question.
Questionnaire administered included open-ended to find out respondents suggestions.
Babasabpatilfreepptmba.com
Page 32
Multiple-Choice Question
Multiple-Choice are immediately followed by a list of possible answers from which
thee respondents must choose.
Questionnaire included multiple-choice questions to find out which source has made
aware about Company, which different plans of company the respondents are aware
of, for which the respondents have .
Dichotomous question
Dichotomous Question represent an extreme form of the multiple-choice question,
Allow only two responses such as YES or NO
This type of questions were used to find out whether respondents aware of Airtel
Landline.
Rating Scales
The use of Rating Scale required the rater to place an attribute of the object being
rated at some point along a numerically ordered series of Categories.
Rating Scale in the Questionnaire focuses on degree to which one feels towards
attributes.

Page 33
SAMPLING
The Process of drawing sample from large population is called Sampling
Sampling procedure
Descriptive field studies require collection of first hand information or data pertaining to
the units of study from the field. The units of study may include ate area covered under
the BELGAUM City.
Sampling Plan
Sampling Unit :
The Sample unit is basic unit containing the elements of the population to be
sampled. The sample unit in the research is Business houses, House holds etc,.
Sampling size
Sample size refers to the number of elements include in the study. An
important decision that has to be taken while adopting sampling techniques is the
sample size. In this study the sample size for respondents was decided to be 300,
Sampling Extent
The survey was conducted in limited areas within the BELGAUM City. Locations
visited were RPD Cross, Hindawadi and other locations.
Sampling Type:
Simple random sampling
Babasabpatilfreepptmba.com
Page 34
Data Analysis
Data collected is useful only after analysis. Data analysis involves converting a series of
recorded observations into descriptive statements and inferences about relationships. The
types of analysis that can be conducted depend on the nature of the measurement
instrument and the data collected method. If the researcher selects the analytical
techniques prior to collecting data, the researcher should generate fictional responses to
the measurement instrument.
