Comparing Numbers 1-10 with Pete the Cat (Math, Kindergarten)

OBJECTIVES:
a. Students will listen to and view the book Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy
Buttons.
b. Students will compare numbers 1-10 in the Pete the Cat Comparing
Numbers booklet by counting the buttons, writing the numeral, and then
coloring the set of buttons that is greater.
IIl. MATERIALS:
Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons book by Eric Litwin
Pete the Cat Comparing Numbers Booklet
Crayons
Elmo & Projector

PROCEDURE:
Invite students to carpet.
Introduce the book that will be read.
Play the book CD. Turn the pages as needed.
Throughout the book, pause and ask students to identify some of the
numbers they see. Write those numbers on the board and ask students to
compare them by holding up their fingers representing the amount thats
greater.
Once the book is finished, ask students to return to their seats.
Introduce the Comparing Numbers booklet and pass it out.
Model the first two pages. Count the buttons as a class, write down the
number in the box, and then color the buttons that have a greater amount.
Students will finish the rest of the booklet independently. Assist where
needed.
ASSESSMENT OF OBJECTIVES / EVALUATION:
a) Students will be assessed throughout the lesson through discussion
and by walking around and observing. Students will also turn in their
booklets to be checked.
