A big boost for Cumbernauld New independent regulatory body

The first independent national regulatory body for the double-glazing and
conservatory industry has been launched by a Lancashire Trade Association
expert.
The market for private house owners is worth 4.65bn a year, but the sector
still has an image problem caused by rogue traders. Now Tony Pickup has
established, after four years research and a two year pilot scheme, the Double
Glazing and Conservatory Ombudsman Scheme, (DGCOS) with offices in
Manchester and Chorley.
He has won the backing of consumer champion, Nick Ross, for the schemes
bid to improve the industrys reputation. The former BBC Watchdog presenter
will be the spokesman for DGCOS, which will provide protection for homeowners
installing PVCu windows, doors and conservatories.
The nationwide Ombudsman scheme, which has created 14 new jobs, offers
consumers access to high quality, vetted installers. Consumers will receive a
Peace of Mind pack and a free quote from members, explaining that they will
have the full protection of the Ombudsman Scheme behind them, as well as
deposit protection insurance and a ten-year insurance-backed guarantee.

The first images of a striking 10m high steel sculpture, which

aims to transform the image of a Scottish town, have been revealed.
International public artist Andy Scott has been working on the quartermillion-pound female figure for Cumbernauld since it was commissioned
in September 2009. The artwork will be unveiled in summer 2010.
The first pictures show the sculptures head, which is made of steel
plates and stands 1.5m high and 1.5m wide. Her hair is sculpted in a
1960s-style reflecting the early days of Cumbernauld as a new town.
The brainchild of Campsies Centre Cumbernauld (CCCL) a special
purpose company established by North Lanarkshire Council to facilitate
the redevelopment of Cumbernauld the sculpture will overlook the A80
northbound, north of Auchenkilns Junction. Part of the Cumbernauld
Positive Image Project, the artwork will be seen by more than 70,000
people every day. It is hoped that she will help to boost the towns image.

Forgotten spaces
Forgotten Spaces is an exhibition that
showcases the best entries from a
landmark design competition launched
by RIBA London, Design for London,
and investor and developer Qatari Diar.
The competition asked designers to seek
out disused and forgotten areas of London
and put forward ideas for developing the
space to serve the local area. The proposals
could be simple or complex, commercial
or public; a piece of public art or a new
building. The only requirement was to
respond to a need in the community.
Forgotten Spaces promotes a grass roots approach to urban design with local
artists and designers devising solutions for individual sites. The exhibition
features a wide array of conceptual projects and possibilities for overlooked
spaces across the capital. The exhibition runs until 4 July 2010 at Lyttelton Foyer,
National Theatre, Southbank.
An onslaught
of adjudications
Duke is baled
over by straw
Construction law arbitrator and

adjudication expert Jonathan Nugent of
Arbicon ADR has predicted that a recent
court judgement will mean most main
contractors will start experiencing a
sharp rise in adjudications.
In a landmark judgement on 13 April
2010 the Technology and Construction
Court ruled that so-called Tolent clauses
in contracts do not comply with the
Housing, Grants, Construction and
Regeneration Act 1996 (the Construction
Act). These clauses have in the past meant
that sub-contractors taking a main
contractor to adjudication in a dispute
have had to pay all the main contractors
legal costs and all of the adjudicators fees
and expenses, irrespective of the outcome
of the adjudication.
Jonathan Nugent stated: It is not
surprising to see such a judgement since
the new Construction Act, which has been
passed but yet to come into force, makes
Tolent clauses void, reflecting the spirit
of the industry and parliament. It therefore
appears very unlikely that the new ruling
in this case will be overturned.
This change in the law will open the
floodgates and we predict most main
contractors will now start experiencing
an onslaught of adjudications.
The countrys first council houses

built of straw will be visited by His
Royal Highness, the Duke of
Gloucester, on 17 June 2010.
North Kesteven District Council
has invited His Royal Highness
to view its ground-breaking
development in Waddington
in connection with his personal
and professional interest in
architecture.
The two houses, which are now
complete at Brumby Crescent, are
the first in the country to be built
of straw by a local authority.
They have been jointly funded
by the Council and the Homes
& Community Agency and are
built to the highest environmental
specifications.
The revolutionary design and
build technology includes walls
made of straw bales, sheeps wool
padding in the floor and extra
thick roof insulation, recycled
glass blocks in the foundations
and lime instead of cement in all
aggregates. They also feature large
south facing windows for maximum
warmth and light and are tripleglazed to reduce heat loss.

London calling...
This years London Festival of Architecture, The Welcoming City,
takes place from 19 June-4 July 2010. A city-wide celebration
of architecture in the capital, it will host a series of events to
highlight Londons status as an international architectural hub

Central: Nash Ramblas 19-20 June

The West End Hub Nash Ramblas, is centred
around Portland Place and Regent Street and
the Royal Parks. It highlights possibilities for an
improved pedestrian route along the Nash Plan
of 1810 for Regents Park and Regent Street. Other
events include a 48 hour talks programme in Park
Crescent, an exhibition in Regents park telling the
Nash story, shop window installations, a BBC
Broadcasting House Building Tour and Royal
Academy workshops. A series of solar operated
hydraulic lifts will also illustrate the issue of
disabled access, transporting wheelchair users
from Waterloo steps to Waterloo place, while
uniting the hub is an iPhone application guide.
East: High Street 2012 26-27 June
The East End of London between Whitechapel and
Stratford will host High Street 2012, representing
the last 6km of the London Olympic Marathon in
2012, as well as a wider streetscape and
regeneration strategy. It will also host a series of
Festival activities including a new commission
from critically-acclaimed Austrian architect

Feld72 reviving a vacant town centre building,
guided tours of the dynamic area in historic
Routemaster buses and interactive installations
designed and built by international architecture
students. The East End Weekend is co-ordinated
by The Architecture Foundation.
South: Bankside Urban Forest 3-4 July
The final weekend of the Festival brings focus to
the area stretching between the culturally vibrant
South Bank of the River Thames and the Elephant
and Castle neighbourhood further south. Taking
its cues from Witherford Watson Mann architects
Bankside Urban Forest scheme, it will create
multiple opportunities for exchange between
Festival visitors and local residents. Festival
activities include a theatre built from locallysourced recycled materials by German architect
Kbberling and Kaltwasser, a pop-up cookery
school at Borough Market, and guerrilla
gardening projects. There will also be tours of the
Tate Modern oil tanks, guided walks and lectures.
Love Your Street

The Festival programme will also highlight
community schemes that pose solutions to
current political needs, such as Love Your Street,
an initiative to encourage residents to share ideas
on improving their neighbourhoods and the Urban
Island project, which aims to map and revive
empty spaces across London, working with
Southwark schools to transform them into
spaces that young people could use.
International Architecture Student Festival
Students from international schools of
architecture and design from countries including
Australia, Austria, Italy, Lebanon, Turkey and the
United Kingdom have been working on their
designs for interventions in public spaces along
High Street 2012 and in Bankside Urban Forest.
The students will work together with local
communities to make site-specific interventions
that respond to the Student Festival theme of
Make do and Mend and Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
to highlight key environmental issues.
International Architecture Showcase

The British Council and the Architecture
Foundation are bringing together a broad
spectrum of exciting international architecture
projects within the International Architecture
Showcase programme. This project will see more
than 30 Embassies and Cultural Institutes around
London presenting a series of exhibitions,
installations, events and talks programmes to
highlight the dynamic architectural projects that

are emerging from their respective countries and
to address the theme of the The Welcoming City.
The London Festival of Architecture founding
director, Peter Murray, said: This is an exciting
period in which to hold the Festival of
Architecture. Although the economic downturn
has slowed development, it has given us a chance
to think about what sort of architecture we want in
the future. People have the time and inclination

to debate these issues and we are looking
forward to a very lively two weeks in the summer.
At the same time, many UK architects are busy
working around the world and form an important
part of Londons creative economy.
The Open Studios programme will give the
public a chance to see the work that our leading
practices are doing.

The more clearly the architecture of a building conveys values such

as sustainability and flexibility, the more authentic the activities
of the people who work within it become. A good example is the
headquarters of the French Institute for Radiological Protection and
Nuclear Safety (IRSN), in Fontenay-aux-Roses. Here, transparency and
protection of the environment represent an integral part of the research
activities of the establishment, but they are also reflected in the new
design of the renovated building. ABC&D takes a look at the project...

ustainability was an
important factor during the
project and was achieved by
architect Archicrea through a
conscious choice of materials. The
fully glazed external faade gives the
headquarters a communicative and
open character, but, more than that,
it also ensures sufficient amounts of
daylight penetrate within the inside
of the building.
From 1980s building to modern
headquarters
After the building was purchased
in 2005, it was intended to provide
the future base for more than
600 employees. These employees
had previously been split between
main administration and various
specialist areas, but were now to
be brought together in one place.
However, before they could start
moving urgent renovation was
needed. Built in the 1980s, the
building had obvious failings in a
number of areas. Both in terms of
energy consumption, room layout
and its external appearance, the
building was completely out of
keeping with the requirements of
the owners. Having already carried
out numerous building renovations
with a view to obtaining greater
energy efficiency for institutions,
including some of the high-rise
Paris buildings, Archicrea was able
to take a systematic approach and
demonstrate its expertise in
developing fully integrated concepts.
As part of the renovation of the
existing building undertaken for the
Institute, the following works were
carried out: full renovation of the

various floor levels and upgrading

of all electrical engineering
installations; redesign of all
corridors; fitting out of a new
reception area; laying out of a new
car park with dedicated access;
as well as full renovation and
restructuring of the external faade.
Rationality and transparency
as an institutional hallmark
Prior to renovation, the front faade
in particular was completely out of
keeping with what the site manager
was looking for. It presented an
outdated and coldly alienating
frontage, which appeared almost
secretive due to the opacity of its
reflective glazing. The new faade,
on the other hand, positively
radiates the clarity of a modern age.
The Institute also wanted to
communicate how it relates to the
environment and its transparency in
respect of the general public, said
architect Jean Do Nascimento.
This concern was successfully met
through the use of new materials,
such as transparent glass and wood
design, aluminium composite
panels. The latter were used as
cladding and to provide additional
insulation for the centre stiffeners
that had been concealed in masonry.
The red-brown, wood effect of the
panel surface provides a calming
and techno-rational contrast to the
glass components of the faade,
which afford a view into the activities
of the Institute.
The new glass faade also does
full justice to both the aesthetic
aspect and that of ecological
sensitivity, as it allows daylight

to penetrate deep inside the

building, providing natural
illumination of the working areas.
This new transparency has turned
the faade into a showcase that
communicates the work of the
Institute to the outside world.
Conversely, the surrounding
landscape also gains entry to the
building through its continuous
presence in view of the staff
throughout their working day.
Both the faade and the flexibility
of the newly designed floor level
structure create a climate of
openness and interaction that has
a positive effect on the creativity
and motivation of the staff.
Systematic sustainability
Three objectives of sustainability,
transparency and flexibility were
also added to those of energy
efficiency and optimisation of
heat and humidity.
These objectives are all part of
a method that has proved itself
in France as developing a higher
environmental quality (HQE) of
building. The HQE initiative seeks
to reduce the harm done to the
environment by buildings, either
by improving energy efficiency and
reducing the production of waste,
or by designing healthy and flexible
interiors. For the guidance of
architects, and all those involved in
building construction, there are 14
fixed objectives, including the three
mentioned above, covering all types
of new build and renovation projects.

As well as all stages in the life of

the building from design through
utilisation to demolition.
Archicrea took on this challenge by
integrating a range of modernising
changes. One of the things they did
was to encourage the control of
pollution of the environment arising
from the emission of carbon dioxide,
sulphur dioxide and radioactive
waste. The hygrothermal (heating
and humidity) conditions for the
summer and winter months were
optimised using the new room
layout and measures to prevent heat
accumulation, direct sunshine and
draughts. Stable temperatures now
ensure a pleasant room climate
during working hours throughout
the building.
Conscious use of light for a
better working environment
Access to daylight, the quantity of
light, and the new spaces and vistas
that have been opened up, all
ensure natural illumination of the
working areas, avoiding potential
disadvantages such as light dazzle.
All these factors not only contribute
to reduced energy consumption, but
also considerably enhance the
working environment.

standards demand dpcs are incorporated below all timber frame sole plates of ground floor walls. Furthermore, in
addressing the requirements for air tightness, Robust Details calls for the dpc to turn up and lap with a vapour control
layer. Using traditional dpc to create such an arrangement can be difficult. Traditional dpc can also distort, be

composite doors that provide extra
protection in the event of flooding is

the recent Cumbrian floods proved,
flooding is a major risk for a large
number of homes and businesses.
Over 10% of homes in England are
built on a flood plain; 11% of all new

The British Fire Consortium is the UKs largest fire trade
association, comprising 220 independent companies.
BFC member companies work closely with local authorities,
the fire service and private commercial clients, and much
of their business is specified by fire officers and building
control departments. Here, one member company discusses
the importance of fixed extinguisher systems...

Phoenix Fire, is typical of
many members of the BFC.
It offers a broad range of fire safety
services including the production
of fire risk assessments, now a
mandatory requirement for nearly
all organisations under current fire
legislation. The company also
specialises in the installation and
maintenance of sprinkler systems
and dry risers.
Sprinkler systems
Increasingly specified for all types of
premises, a sprinkler system is the
only device which can detect a fire,
sound the alarm, call the fire brigade
and control or extinguish a fire all at
the same time. The most common
cause of fire related death is from
smoke inhalation. Sprinklers
dramatically reduce the amount of
smoke created as they attack the
fire in its early stages and, because
sprinklers wash the larger particles
out of smoke, its density and toxicity
is reduced. Each sprinkler head is
individually activated by the heat of a
fire and, in the majority of cases, only
one head will be triggered, which will
be sufficient to extinguish most fires.
A key barrier to the adoption of
sprinkler systems used to be the fear
of water damage but domestic fire
sprinklers only spray 10-15 gallons

of water per minute. When this is
compared to a firemans hose which
delivers 250-500 gallons per minute,
it is clear which will cause most
damage.
Paul McTurk, managing director
of Phoenix Fire, cites fear of arson
in schools as the key driver of most
current local authority sprinkler
specifications, a trend he has
witnessed over the last five years.
Weve fitted systems at schools
which have suffered serious fires
occurring in school holidays because
a sprinkler system is the only way to
protect premises when they are
empty, he explained. However,
this peace of mind represents a
significant investment, as a system
comprising 1,500 sprinkler heads,
a typical number installed across a
large secondary school premises,
can cost up to 350,000. Primary
school installations may comprise
250-300 heads and represent an
investment of around 70,00090,000.
A further consideration is the cost
of two maintenance visits each year,
the first of which has to include a full
system overhaul and pump service.
These visits have to be backed up
by recorded, weekly testing by the
premises own maintenance team.
It is also important to note that the

installation of a sprinkler system will
not relax the requirement for other
fire safety measures such as fire
alarms and portable fire
extinguishers. However, the
installation of a comprehensive
sprinkler system may provide scope
for negotiating insurance premiums.
Dry risers
Phoenix Fire has also recorded an
increase in enquiries for dry riser
maintenance since the tragic fire at
the Lakanal House tower block last
year. Dry risers have to be installed
into any building where the furthest
point is more than 45m from the fire
appliance and, to comply with BS EN
9990:2006, have to be visually
inspected and serviced every six
months and pressure tested
annually. In a fire situation, the riser
will be pressurised to 10 bar
immediately, so it is crucial that all
inlet and landing valves and
associated washers are sound and
the riser itself is clear of debris. If a
building has more than 18 storeys,
then a wet riser, permanently
charged with water, will normally be
installed.
Mr. McTurk continues, The work
required to bring a dry riser up to a
reasonable standard is often huge.
Valves will be leaking and seals

broken, because the systems simply
havent been maintained. The high
scrap value of the gun metal and
brass valves, where the fire service
hook their hoses into the riser, also
leads to frequent theft and
vandalism. To overcome this
problem, weve developed a new style
vandal resistant dry riser cabinet,
with anti-tamper latches and bolts.

high street retailer New Look was
fined 400,000 and ordered to pay
costs of 136,052 after pleading guilty to
serious breaches of the Regulatory Reform
(Fire Safety) Order 2005 (RRO). This is
currently the largest fine handed out
under the order.
London Fire Brigade prosecuted New Look
following a blaze at their Oxford Street store
in 2007. Thirty fire engines and around 150
firefighters were needed to tackle the blaze
and crews remained at the scene for three
days. The first call to the Brigade was not
from a member of staff but from an office
worker in a nearby building. This delay meant
that the fire had already developed and had
broken through the second floor windows
when crews arrived. Despite the building's
fire alarm sounding, it was reset on at least
one occasion.
Following the fire, the Brigade carried out
several fire safety inspections and found a
substantial number of breaches of fire
legislation. The most serious of these was a
fire risk assessment with numerous failures,
including no record of the correct procedure
to adopt when the fire alarm is activated.
The RRO requires the responsible person
(in a workplace it is the employer) to carry
out a suitable fire risk assessment and act
on its findings.
Another significant breach was the
insufficient training of staff, which led to a
delayed evacuation of the premises and staff
being ill-prepared to respond to a fire or fire
alarm signal. Staff did not use the
appropriate fire exits to evacuate the public,
which meant that approximately 150 people
were evacuated through the main entrance
directly underneath the fire.
Other serious deficiencies included:
All of the basement fire exits were
unavailable to members of staff and the
public because the swipe card system, which

should have linked to the fire alarm system
and opened the doors in an emergency, was
not properly connected.
Not all members of staff were issued with
swipe cards.
The green emergency break glass,
designed to override the door locks, was
fitted on the wrong side of the doors in the
basement.
The premises was also found to have items
blocking escape routes on all floors.
The RRO requires that:
Emergency doors must not be so locked or
fastened that they cannot be easily and
immediately opened by any person in an
emergency.
Routes to emergency exits from premises
and the exits themselves must be kept clear
at all times.
The responsible personensures their
employees are provided with adequate fire
safety training.
The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order
2005 applies to virtually all premises and
covers nearly every type of building, structure
and open space. It does not, however, apply
to people's private homes.
Mandy Perry, divisional managing director

Ask yourself how robust your fire safety
arrangements are and if they are being
adhered to. There are many areas you may
not be aware of, for example, do your fire
safety arrangements include emergency
procedures for leaving the building?
Even with stringent and far-reaching
safety procedures, your business may still
be at risk from fire-related damage.
Check the cover you have in place and
ensure your insurance broker is giving you
advice on all the issues surrounding fire and
other types of damage.

The London Fire Commissioner

has stressed the importance of
complying to the Regulatory
Reform (Fire Safety) Order, as it
was revealed that some businesses
still do not understand the
importance of this legislation.

LEDs get their big break in Sheffield

OSRAMs COINlight-OSTAR LED
modules and control gear have been
specified by Michael Popper
Associates and included in luminaires
produced by lighting manufacturer
Metro, to illuminate the Crucible
Theatre in Sheffield. OSRAMs LED
modules were specified to provide a
high level of light output as well as
long lamp life. It was essential that
the modules came equipped with a
long lifespan as the fittings are in an
awkward location which makes relamping difficult. The original lighting
for the auditoriums starry sky was
replaced with 756 OSRAM COINlightOSTAR units which achieve higher
light levels, require virtually no
maintenance and save at least
17 tonnes of CO2 a year.
Setting new standards

New to Samsungs RAC range, the

A matter of trust

look at the options available when a damp proof course fails
and how the usual course of action isnt necessarily the best
course of action to take...
Inserting a physical DPC, with
cement mortar bed, into pre-cut slot
Bespoke cutting equipment creates a

channel ready for the new DPC
t seems that whenever a damp

proof course fails, a chemicalbased injection repair system is
chosen without even thinking about
the alternatives. Yet, the opportunity
to insert a physical DPC is available,
and it brings with it a far more
effective and reliable solution
to this refurbishment problem.
Apart from the situation where a
damp proof course has failed, there
is also the opportunity to insert a
DPC in walls that have never before
benefitted from this essential
protection from rising damp.
While the chemical injection
method has been heralded as a
technical break-through in the
fight against rising damp in
older dwellings and can be
extremely effective if installed
properly it will struggle to perform
to the same standards as a physical
DPC barrier.
Favoured by many housing
associations, councils, property
developers, builders, and individual
home owners across the country,
the physical insertion method can
be employed on brick and stone
walls, up to 1m thick.
If there is one significant
disadvantage with chemical
injection, it is the fact that a
significant amount of internal
rendering is part of the process
bringing with it a longer project time
scale, and the inevitable mess it will

create. With the physical option, only

defective areas of plastering need
to be made good.
External walls could also be
constructed in stone, or a
combination of brick and stone, and
are often greater than 450mm thick.
If a central void has been created, it
may well be filled with rubble, which
does not allow the chemical fluid to
spread properly throughout the
structure.The combination of thick
walls and rubble filled walls make it
difficult, if not impossible, for a
chemical system to be completely
effective.
However, this situation is not a
problem for the physical option.
Internally, the plaster may be in a
poor state of repair. Should it be in
such a condition that removal is the
only course of action, the
specification might then call for
replastering, but lightweight
plasters which will absorb and hold
residual damp and take time to dry
out would be avoided.
As with chemical injection
systems, the insertion of a physical
DPC should only be carried out by
specialist companies with a properly
trained workforce, using the right
equipment.
This equipment includes bespoke
cutting gear that is used to cut a 1m
long section through the wall
whatever its type of traditional
construction. Should a particularly

large stone be encountered, it is

removed providing the added
benefit of giving a further
opportunity to inspect the integrity
of the wall. After the DPC has been
inserted, any removed stones are
then replaced.
The thickness of the cutting
blade creates the precise opening
for the insertion of a physical
DPC, along with the necessary
bedding mortar, which is placed
in the slot that has been created.
The DPC material itself is taken
to site and cut to meet the
width demands of each individual
project.
The entire process is then
repeated, 1m at a time, and before
long the property is enjoying the
benefits of a physical DPC.
Once the mortar has dried, it is a
simple task of repointing the length
of the work to create a finished job
that is neat and tidy, without
adversely affecting the traditional
look of the building.
My company specialises in the
physical DPC option, but does also
offer the chemical solution.
However, in my mind there is
absolutely no doubt that the
physical barrier method is my
preferred choice for practically
every installation. At its very best,
the chemical DPC, along with the
necessary specialist plastering,
can never be as good as the physical

alternative.
Indeed, it is only in party-wall work
where the neighbour refuses
access that I will consider
suggesting using the chemical
option. The level of rising damp
in party walls is often less than
one finds in external walls.
My beliefs have been confirmed
by The Building Research
Establishment which, in its Digest
245, states that a physical DPC is
the only completely sure method to
cure rising damp. This confidence
in the product and its applications
allows me to offer a full insurancebacked 50-year guarantee on the
installation something that the
chemical option cannot match.
Replacing a failed DPC or
inserting one into a wall that has
never enjoyed any protection from
rising damp is not Hobsons Choice.
There is a real option with a physical
DPC and it has real cost-efficiency
benefits.
Physical DPCs are the most
effective solution to overcoming
the problem of rising damp a fact
that has been proven over many
decades.

TECROC turns the table
Passive multi-service chilled beams

from TROX have provided the solution
for the refurbishment of an imposing
art deco building in London. The 1m
contract involved the supply of 1,720m
of TROX multi-service chilled beam
designed specifically for the building.
Combining air conditioning, lighting,
lighting control and PA facilities
in a single architect-inspired fixture,
the chilled beam made a major
contribution to the successful
conversion of this 1930s building.
A Victorian railway turntable has

been restored to its former glory
with the help of technical advice and
three specialist products from the
TECROC range. Peak Rail has fully
restored the turntable at Rowsley
South Station, near Matlock, with
the help of a team of volunteers.

Flexible heating
LK Systems UK were
asked to design and
supply a suitable
underfloor heating
system for the
prestigious apartments
in Eaton Place,
Belgravia. The agreed
LK design involved
different systems for the
two floors, each of which
was around 105m2.
For the second floor, LK
EPS16 Heating Panels
were used in a practical, easily fixed system that is installed directly over
the existing floor base. The panels, being only 16mm deep, take little
height from the room, the heating pipe loops are simply pushed into the
preformed grooves from a roll and a bonded aluminium plate is laid over
the panels to ensure that heat is spread evenly over the whole floor area
with only minimal downward heat loss.
High tech heritage

As part of a major conservation
programme, Castle Howard, one
of Britains finest historic houses,
is combining heritage and high
tech following the installation of
two 100kW Dimplex ground source
heat pumps, and has seen energy
costs reduced by nearly 90%. Since
the heat pumps were switched on
in October 2009, the average fuel
bills have dropped from around
4,690 per month to just 644.
Fast installation
Dublin City University needed to
refurbish its multi-storey car park
where the existing deck coating had
started to fail. It required a resin
waterproofing system, which could
offer outstanding durability, flexibility,
slip-resistance and pleasing
aesthetics. A Degafloor CP TD system

fast installation regardless of weather
and temperature conditions and
delivers outstanding performance in

The key to creating a perfect, durable floor
is in the preparation. Faced with inevitable
problems such as uneven joints, high spots,
contaminants, worn coatings, sticky
residues and unwanted safety signs,
what is the best way to prepare it?
Incorrect preparation can cause more
problems than it solves, so it is important to
get it right. Tracey Glew, managing director
of The Preparation Group, gives an overview
of different preparation methods...

There is an array of surface
preparation equipment and many
different techniques each
producing a different result.
A preparation method may be
specified by the flooring material
manufacturer, but usually the first
stage is to remove the damaged
surface.
Multi-Stripping
Here, blades or picks are attached
to the front of a machine to affect
the removal process. The weight and
position of the blade or pick affects

the removal of the selected surface.
The operator positions the machine
to cut or lift the material as the
machine drives forward. In this way
multi-strippers can remove floor
coverings such as wood, vinyl,
carpets and ceramic tiles, latex,
screeds, waterproofing membranes,
asphalt and bituminous materials,
adhesives, epoxies and urethanes,
sticky residues and thermoplastic
materials.
Having stripped the floor,
the following techniques for floor
preparation can be employed to
create the desired type of flooring:
Dirt, oils and marks do not

adhere to a polished concrete floor
Shotblasting
Steel shot is propelled at high
velocity onto a rotating wheel within
the body of a machine, it is then
thrown onto the surface to be
prepared, in order to produce the
desired surface profile. The whole
process is dust free as the debris is
collected in a vacuum unit for
disposal and the shot is reclaimed.
An infinite range of profiles can be
achieved, each determined by the
size of shot selected and the speed
at which the machine is propelled.
Typical applications include
removing laitance, old paints and
coatings from concrete floors,
sports surfaces, asphalt and stone
profiling surfaces.
Planing
The planing operation is based on
a drum rotating at high speed within
the body of the machine. The profile
is created by interchangeable flails
which produce a number of different
profiles. Milling flails are for the
removal of thermoplastic line
markings, bitumous and rubber
deposits. Beam flails are used for
cleaning concrete and painted
surfaces and TCT flails are best for
cleaning and texturing concrete,
asphalt and stone

Grinding
Grinding is provided by diamond,
tungsten or resin-bonded plates

Applications include removing

mastics, paint, glue, and adhesives

Grinding to expose the aggregate
and then polishing concrete floors
produces an attractive, hard
wearing, slip-free surface on power
floated concrete which does not
dust. As a result of this the process
is specified on many new build and
refurbishment projects throughout
the public sector.
Dirt, oils and marks do not adhere
to a polished concrete floor and the
process also solves problems
involving sealers and water vapour
transmission. Even chewing gum
can be cleaned from a polished
concrete floor. A highly reflective
finish can also be achieved,
maximizing available light to
illuminate the floor, providing up
to a 50% saving on lighting costs.
Different projects require
different tools
Large projects requiring heavy duty
stripping, shotblasting, grinding and
planning are best left to professional
flooring contractors and their fully
trained operatives. However, for
smaller projects there are
lightweight machines available that
can grind, key, texture, sand, clean
and polish a wide range of surfaces.

New dream cream saves energy
Next generation heating

MHS Boilers has supplied 155 of its
district heating Nexus units to a new
student accommodation development
at Tottenham Hale, London. The Nexus
units are bespoke variants of the
standard IS and Monotherm and are
connected to the developments onsite
combined heat and power (CHP) plant.
There are four different types of Nexus
at the building a mixture of heating
and hot water units, as well as hot
water only units for the laundry areas.
Stormdry is a new water repellent

cream from Safeguard that improves
the insulation value of walls by
keeping them dry. Independent tests
carried out by Portsmouth University
suggest that energy savings of up to
29% are possible, depending on the
type of masonry in question and the
location and aspect of the building.
Supplied in the form of a cream,
Stormdry is simply applied to walls
using a brush or roller. Once applied
it penetrates deeply into the wall
before curing to form an invisible
water repellent barrier. Because the
water repellent effect is achieved by
lining the pores of the masonry
rather than blocking them, the wall
is able to continue to breathe
naturally.
Advanced air curtains

Green push in Swansea

Marley Eternits Ecologic roof tile has
been specified on a major housing
renovation scheme in Swansea.
Ecologic, with its ability to absorb and
neutralise harmful nitrous oxides in the
atmosphere, has been chosen for use
on a number of refurbishment
schemes being undertaken by the
council. Such is the impact of the tiles
performance characteristics, estimates
show that during its lifetime an
average-sized roof using Ecologic tiles
could remove an amount of NOx
equivalent to that emitted by a modern
car driving 100,000 miles. In addition,
the tile contains around 50% recycled
content.
H+H is using two detailed costcomparison exercises to prove that

price need never be a barrier to
specifying aircrete for house
building. In a recent public sector
housing development, Wates Living
Space wanted to use aircrete but
was concerned expenditure could
rise as a result. A detailed cost
comparison showed that, contrary
to expectations, a 20,000 saving
could be made using aircrete with
the H+H R Build method of
construction, compared with an
equivalent timber frame approach.
Results demonstrated that up to
an 8% saving is achievable when
using aircrete, compared with
designs built with timber frame
or SIPs.
Energy-saving EC (electricallycommutated) fans are now

available in the UK air curtain
range from Tekadoor. By using
advanced control technologies to
mimic the attributes of DC motors,
EC fans need only 60% of the
energy required by the standard AC
fans used in most air curtains
when running at medium speed.
The resulting 40% saving from the
latest generation of Tekadoor fans
helps building operators meet the
requirements of Part L.
Successful seminars
Mitsubishi Electric embarked
on a nationwide roadshow last

dwellings with restricted or no loft space,
the three user adjustable air flow settings,
up to a maximum of 250m3/hr, allow
powerful extraction from a kitchen and
up to three further wet rooms.
Simultaneously, fresh, warmed and
filtered air is supplied into the living areas
to improve the quality of the indoor

Alfa Lavals new CB60 copper
brazed plate heat exchanger
provides higher thermal efficiency
within a smaller heat transfer area,

performance capacity compared to
its predecessors. Since the new
CB60 offers less pressure drop,
power consumption is also
reduced. With an even more
compact shape, the gasket-free
exchangers can be squeezed into
tight corners.
A first from the BBA
Powerful partnership
A new breakthrough in woodburning
technology now allows solar and
biomass power to be combined for use
in heating and hot water provision.
The integrated technology was
engineered by green heating and hot
water solutions company, Rotex in
conjunction with Broseley Fires. Key to
its success is the Safe Cold Water
System (SCWS); this technology allows
woodburners to be connected to
pressurised boiler systems and
thereby combined with solar energy. It
works by using a thermal valve
calibrated at 97C to flush a loop within
the stove with cold water, preventing the
boiler from overheating and reaching
dangerous pressures.
Kooltherm K-range
gets an A+
The Kooltherm K-range of products
from Kingspan Insulation has
achieved across-the-board A+ BRE
Green Guide 2008 Summary
Ratings. Kingspan Insulation also
commissioned BRE Global to carry
out an environmental profile
assessment for its Therma product
range. As a result, its foil-faced
Therma products achieved an A+
Summary Rating, alongside its
Therma products with other facings
that also achieved an A rating.
The British Board of Agrment

has awarded its first
Environmental Profile Certificate
(10/EP1001) to Saint-Gobain
Weber for its Weber Monocouche
Renders. As a result of a licence
agreement, the profile has been
calculated using identical Life
Cycle Assessment (LCA) based
profiling methodology developed
by BRE Global. It is possible to
include a Green Guide rating as
part of the process, and in this
case the product can achieve an
A+ Green Guide Rating. The BBA
Certificate includes information
on the products embodied
environmental impacts in both
absolute and Ecopoint terms.
Turning up the heat

Vent-Axia has launched a heat
pump division to complement its
Lo-Carbon ventilation range.
The new division is set to offer
both ground source and air
source heat pumps aimed at the
domestic and light commercial

Increasingly strict targets on
carbon emissions and the
introduction of the Government's
new Feed-in Tariff are set to
change the way in which buildings
in the UK are designed. In this
context, Leicester's new Gateway
College is an indication of what
we may expect from the dawning
of what Schueco UK describes as
the age of solar architecture.
The college features a number
of different green technologies,
most noticeably a large, BIPVenabled faade. Set immediately
above the main entrance, the
faade comprises 79m2 of Schco
polycrystalline PV panels set into

When Sustainable Energy Systems
(SES) came to refurbish one of its own
buildings, it made sense for the
company to take advantage of the new
PowerPanel system from Kingspan
Insulated Panels. The system installed
at the Brook House facility was the
Kingspan PowerPanel Roof Laminate,
which comprised a customised version
of KS1000 LP Lo-Pitch insulated roof

Eurisol has welcomed amendments
to Section 6 of Scotlands Building

come into force this October and
require any new build party walls to
be fully filled with an insulation
material that has been shown to
limit air movement, in order to
achieve a U-Value of 0. Critical
research commissioned by Eurisol
has proven that the thermal
performance of party walls can be
significantly enhanced by insulating
with mineral wool, without
compromising acoustic
performance.
Award-winning design
Williams Homes has secured its latest
award win for Tree Top Adventure,
Betws y Coed, in recognition of its use
of Insulslab SFRC, a fully integrated
and highly sustainable foundation
system available from SIG Insulations.
The most recent of the accolades to be
received is the LABC (Local Authority
Building Control) Wales Building
Excellence Award, which followed the
companys regional success in the
North Wales heats. By reducing the
volume of concrete required in
foundation construction, minimising
the amount of site wastage, and

performance of the building floor,

Building Schools for the
Future (BSF) continues
to grow in momentum, it is an
important time for getting the
design specifications for schools
right. The programme provides
an essential opportunity for
construction professionals to
incorporate some innovative
developments in building design
and construction.
Creative design, with regards to
school buildings, is often associated
with aesthetically pleasing exteriors
or exciting classroom layouts.
However, Durapipe UK is advising
that it does not need to be limited
to the areas of a school that can be
seen by the public; it should also
extend to building products such
as pipework, heating and ventilation
systems.
With the BSF programme
demanding strict criteria, it is
important that all construction
products meet the complete set of
requirements, and pipework is no
exception. Timescales, performance
and cost are the main priorities, so
manufacturers, specifiers and
contractors all need to work
together to demonstrate product
credentials. In terms of pipework,
metal systems have always been the
traditional material choice for use in
schools, but Durapipe UK is urging
the industry to use the BSF platform
to consider more innovative
solutions; plastic pipework systems
offer a viable alternative and meet
all the necessary criteria.
Timescales
Timescales for the completion
of construction projects are getting
shorter and shorter, but the BSF
programme is even more timecritical, given the ambition to either
re-build or renew 3,500 schools over
a 15-year period. In addition,
construction and refurbishment

work is often restricted to school
holiday periods to minimise
disruption, meaning that deadlines
are crucial and not negotiable.
Plastic pipework systems lend
themselves well to time-critical
construction as they are significantly
quicker and easier to install than
metal systems, reducing labour time
on site. With the lightweight
material being approximately one
sixth the weight of steel, plastic
systems are easier to handle on site,
and combined with the quick and
easy jointing method, which doesnt
require hot works or welding, plastic
pipework can provide cost and time
savings during the installation
process.
Performance
Performance requirements
will vary depending on the specific
application; a drainage system for
a science laboratory needs to be
chemical resistant; pipework for
chilled water and air conditioning
systems needs to have a wide
operational temperature range, and
soil, waste and rainwater drainage
needs to be impact and weather
resistant.
There is often a misconception
that plastic is plastic and there is
just one available system, but this is
simply not the case; there are many
different plastic materials that all
possess different attributes and
cater for the needs of specific
applications:
Vulcathene provides excellent
chemical drainage and can cope
with unknown chemical
combinations, which is vital in
schools as risks simply cannot be
taken when it comes to dealing with
chemicals
ABS pipework systems are
a suitable choice for chilled water
applications, as the wide
temperature range sees the

pipework remain ductile down
to -40C
C-PVC pipework systems are
solvent cement jointed, so are easy
to install, and their corrosion and
limescale resistant properties make
them ideal for hot and cold water
systems
HDPE drainage systems
offer high impact resistance and
protection from weathering and
ageing. This makes HDPE a
suitable material for soil, waste
and rainwater drainage systems
that need to be installed outside
Cost
Cost is always a key factor in any
construction project, but this will
become even more important for the
BSF programme if available finance
becomes restricted due to the
economic downturn. Often, only the
initial costs are considered at the
outset, i.e. material and labour costs
to install products. Durapipe UK is
advising that whole life costs, which
will be incurred throughout the
lifetime of the system, also need to
be considered at the beginning

of the project.
The costs associated with plastic
systems compare favourably to
metal alternatives, and the lower
labour costs associated with plastic
pipework means that the total
installed and whole life costs of
plastic are much lower than
traditional metal systems.
There are many benefits to
utilising more innovative systems
and materials, such as plastic
pipework, and with the costs and
timescales of the BSF programme
being crucial, all contractors and
consultants pitching for BSF
contracts need to be considering
such options to remain competitive
and forward thinking.

he educational needs of the

students of today are changing
rapidly. As the demands on
teaching and learning grow, so
does the need for designing an
educational environment that adapts
to this change and understands the
requirements of the students of
tomorrow.
The Government has recognised
that investing in the future of
education is central to the success
of the economy going forward, and
programmes such as Building
Schools for the Future (BSF)
reaffirm this strategy.
Building for the future, regardless
of what sector it is in, requires
foresight, courage and strategic
vision for all those connected to
the project. Therefore, schemes like
BSF with its 55bn funding, are an
excellent way of getting the very
best schools for future generations.
Today, a good educational
establishment, whether it is via a
BSF programme or a private college
programme, will be one which
incorporates a high quality design,
induces learning and passion within
students for a sustainable approach,
and considers the environmental
impact of the building.
With the Government keen
on making the UK a low carbon
economy most evident in the
recent, first-ever, carbon budget
lowering carbon emissions and
playing a part in addressing the

Furthermore, ambitious targets

specifically aimed at the education
sector, require carbon emissions in
school buildings to be reduced by
60% from a base figure of a school
buildings predicted energy use,
making energy efficiency even more
of a vital concern when constructing

targets, additional funding has been
made available for investment in
energy efficiency measures such
as those which will reduce the
demand for heating.
Ecological development
The quickest way to achieve
sustainability targets is by using
products during the build process

of roofing, manufacturers of roof

focussed on producing materials
which are as environmentally friendly
as possible and offer the best green
credentials.
A tile is available on the market
that is not only a pollution-busting
product, manufactured from
approximately 50% recycled content,

The tile has the ability to absorb and
neutralise harmful Nitrogen Oxides
(NOx) in the atmosphere.
NOx contributes to the formation of
ground level ozone a major
component of smog and is strongly
associated with asthma and other
respiratory infections, particularly in
the very young. The qualities of this

product, therefore, make it an

apt choice for school buildings.
Natural vs fibre cement
Tiles such as those mentioned
previously, are relatively new in
conception and there are further
environmentally friendly options
for roof coverings available on the
market. When refurbishing older
school buildings, a major
consideration is how best to blend
the refurbishment with the original
look and feel of the building and to
make sure it fits in with the
surrounding area. Indeed, this is
often a particular requirement stated
in planning conditions and eventual
consent.
Many older school buildings feature
slate as the chosen roof covering,
and so, on many occasions, this is
the material which is sought as a
replacement. However, there is a
common misconception about the
green credentials of natural slates.
Slates produced from natural
sources draw on rapidly
dwindling resources, and only
5% of mined natural slate ends
up being used. Cheaper imports
from abroad are now commonly
selected on UK projects as
an alternative, despite the
significant environmental impact
of transportation over vast
distances. This combination of
natural source usage and the
impact of long-distance
sourcing, vividly highlights the
benefits of alternative fibre
cement and interlocking slates,

with real green credentials.
Education is best delivered via a

An industry first
A woodland feel
The faade of St Theresa School
in Bilthoven, Holland needed to
complement the lightly wooded
landscape in which it is located.
Therefore, Tanalised E pressure
treated timber cladding from
Arch Timber Protection was
chosen. The rounded shapes of
the building depict three logs, with
the treated cladding representing
the bark. The design of the
building and the cladding ensures
that the building fits in with its
forested surroundings.
The Siberian Larch cladding has
been treated by Foreco Dalfsen
with Tanalith E preservative with
a water repellent additive, that
ensures a long service life for
the timbers and helps maintain its
attractive appearance and shape.
GEZE UK has launched the

industrys first range of closers that
are fully certificated to EN 1154 and
EN 1155 (Electro hold-open models)
for concealed transom mounting.
This new range of transom closers
called Invers, provides the solution
for double action doorsets, where
the use of conventional floor closers
is not possible due to floor slab
depths, or where penetrations into
pre-stressed concrete floors are not
permissible. The Invers closers are
concealed within the transom, with
the spindle connecting neatly to the
top strap mounted in the top of the
door. This direct connection

Blairgowrie has supplied 1,650m2
of its timber cladding for use on
the New International School of
Aberdeen. Based in Cults near
Aberdeen, the school recently
underwent a major new build
programme to replace the existing
school, one aspect of which was
the installation of external timber
cladding. Royale Cladding in
golden colour was specified to
blend in with the semi-rural
environment. This product suits
projects such as schools and
other public buildings, as it is low
maintenance and comes with a
standard 30-year warranty against
rot and decay. Royale Timber
cladding not only has superior
weathering properties, but is also
an environmentally sound exterior
cladding, which comes in natural
colours and various profiles. The
Osmose treatment gives softwood
the typical properties of hardwood,
by increasing the water resistance
and stability, enabling them to be
used in applications generally
more suited to hardwoods.
A state-of-the-art sports centre at

the St. Johns Beaumont School,
near Egham, required a heating
system that offered flexibility
alongside superb efficiency.
The solution was AmbiRads NorRay-Vac a radiant heating system
that has been installed in over 700
sports halls in the UK. To ensure
energy efficiency, the system had
to stand alone from the schools
boilers, which function 24/7, and
warm up quickly when needed.
It also had to have superb
temperature control, able to be
cool enough for athletic activities
and hot enough to keep people
warm during school events.

advanced that, as well as heating
halls precisely, it can warm

Charity bike ride

Phil Bell, managing director of

gruelling, unsupported 800-mile
bike ride across France on behalf
of the British Heart Foundation
Charity. The solo ride from Caen,
through France along the Canal

town of Narbonne, will take
approximately 10 days starting
from 3 June and finishing on
17 June, if everything goes
according to plan.
Hepworth Framework celebrated 20 years in the business with a birthday

party on Friday 16 April 2010. The company was founded in 1990 by
Bernard Hepworth as a manufacturer and installer of aluminium door
and window products for commercial and domestic use. Current owner,
and managing director, Richard Steckles joined the company in 1994,
bringing his extensive joinery and engineering experience to the business.
A birthday party is a good way to acknowledge the continuing success
of the company and share this with our staff, says Richard.
The construction industry has gone through difficult time recently,

Since Norbord launched its

of using substandard, uncertified
material, especially for structural
purposes in the building industry,
still sees the problem today.
The plywood market in the UK is
still enormous and theres a huge
variety of product currently available,
commented Norbord sales director,
Maurice Fitzgibbon. Unfortunately,
substandard plywood, which is often
more expensive than OSB, is still
marketed as an alternative to Sterling
OSB, added Maurice.

a new pump rental and service centre
in Thirsk, North Yorkshire. The new
facility will provide an enhanced
service to customers in the North of

ITTs service repair and response
times for customers in the area, due
to its increased storage area and
expanded service capability.
Hunter Douglas solid wood Linear

Open ceiling system has been specified
for a combined refurbishment and new
build scheme for the extension to the
headquarters of 02 in Slough. The
scheme includes a new link building to
unite the different elements, creating
visitor and staff flow and interaction.
700m2 of the solid wood Linear Open
ceiling system in WRC and European
Oak was installed in 111mm modules
comprising of 92mm wide panels with
a 19mm gap. The Hunter Douglas solid
wood ceiling system can be specified
as either a fixed or demountable
system allowing easy access into the
void. The system design ensures the
panels remain level and straight in all

Powrmatic brings a breath of fresh air

Powrmatic has been called in to
provide ventilation at the Glen Turner
Distillerys new 30m facility at
Bathgate, West Lothian. Powrmatics
louvres will ensure the correct
temperature and ambient conditions
are maintained as the whisky
manufacturing process is completed.
Main contractor Colorado Group
contracted Ayrshire-based specialist
Newton Fabrications to supply and
install the external envelope to the
steel structure on the distillery,
which includes the external
ventilation package. Given the
working temperature within the
distillery it was imperative that the
ventilation products installed
performed to the specification as
laid down by the client.
Heating up Holywell
Over 100 Honeywell Kombi 4 throttle
and balancing valves have been
installed for easier and faster
commissioning of the domestic hot
water system at the new Holywell
Community Hospital in Wales. The low
cost valves ensure a constant supply of
hot water to all outlets at the right
pressure and also assist in occasional
thermal flushing, necessary to inhibit
Legionella bacteria. The Kombi 4 valves
are installed in the hot water returns to
balance the hot water system.

Kingfisher Lighting was approached by

the W H Good Building Services division
to provide a challenging lighting solution
for Terminal 1 at Manchester Airport,
involving illuminating the external
lighting of the top deck split level
car park utilising LED products. The
Kingfisher team of lighting designers
presented a design proposal based on
the ILO LED using a combination of twin
and triple mounted lighting points. ILO LED is an architecturally inspired
luminaire designed for the urban environment, benefiting from the latest LED
technology. Available with four LED arrangements (36 LED, 54 LED, 72 LED
and 90 LED), ILO offers a practical level of light output with a lamp lumen
range of 3,235 to 8,088lm, with colour temperature at a cool 6,000K.

St John's Square has undergone

a 3.5m redevelopment. Urban
Elements was appointed to design
and supply directional signage to
the development area and a series
of elaborate semi-circular seat
units incorporating LED lighting.
The signage is manufactured in blue
anodised aluminium mounted to a
Duplex stainless steel post. To enhance its night time appearance the signage
incorporates an illuminated beacon in cast acrylic with blue LED. The seating
design incorporates a stainless steel frame and support legs fitted with
wooden slats in Iroko wood for high durability and minimal maintenance.
The seating is fitted with flexible linear LED lighting to the underside providing
a subtle lighting effect that enhances the overall lighting of the Square.

improved performance over conventional
pitched roof constructions can make all
the difference when final completion air
leakage testing, in accordance with
Building Regulations Part L, takes place.

A lighting management system from ALC

Lighting Controls is helping to deliver
high energy efficiency at the new offices
of Moore Management's in St Helier,
Jersey. The system comprises presence
detection, timed on/off switching and
customisable scene setting, controlling a
wide range of luminaires from general
office lighting through to cold cathode
light sources. The system is divided into
PIR linked zones, allowing the lighting to
be controlled in relation to individual desked areas. The lighting is controlled in
relation to the occupancy of each zone through the day and supplemented by
an all off setting at a pre-set time, although this is overridden by the PIR
sensors if the space is still occupied.
