How is energy transferred in mechanical devices? How do mechanical devices provide for
controlled application of energy in ways that are efficient, effective and responsible?

The following concepts are developed in this unit and may also be
addressed in other units at other grade levels. The intended level and
scope of treatment is defined by the outcomes below.

Notes

Introduction
We are starting to look at pulleys now. We are going
to start with a small youtube clip and then do an
investigation in the computer lab.
During this video please make note of the two
different types of pulleys and how they can help you.

What was it called when the pulley was fastened to
something? (fixed pulley)
What did it do for you? (changes the direction you are

pulling, but does not decrease the force needed.)

What was it called when a pulley is not fastened to
something? (movable pulley)
How does it work? (cuts the force needed in half,
because it is almost like there are two people acting
on it(one on each side). However with less force, it
requires you to move a farther distance.)
Move to the computer lab to work on the
investigation. It is on Learn Alberta, student type in
Pulley lab in the search bar and it is the first to pop
up. Students given a work booklet to start working
through. They may work with a partner but both
should understand what is happening, as we will be
discussing this tomorrow. Student will not likely get
through it all so they will have time to work tomorrow
on it before we discuss.
Wrap up and conclusions
Before class is over, have student log off the
computer and return to class. Let them know that
we will be working on this tomorrow again and
then discussing it, so they should not loose this
booklet.
