CLASSIFICATION

OF CAMS

SUB:-K.O.M

CAM Definition:

Cams are used to convert rotary

motion into reciprocating motion

Examples Of Cams:-

In IC engines to operate the inlet and exhaust

valves

Classification of cams:According to the shape:-

1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.

Wedge and flat cams.

Radial or disc cams.
Spiral cams.
Cylindrical cams.
Conjugate cams.
Globoidal cams.
Spherical cams.

According to the follower movement:1.

2.
3.

Rise return. (R-R-R)

Dwell-rise-return-dwell. (D-R-R-D)
Dwell-rise-return-dwell. (D-R-D-R-D)

According to the constraint of follower:1.

2.
3.

Preloaded spring cam.

Positive drive cam.
Gravity cam.

1.Wedge and flat cams.

In this cam, wedge has a reciprocating

motion
whereas
followers
has
reciprocating motion.
Continuous contact between wedge and
follower is maintained using spring.

2.Radial or disc cams.

In this cam, follower moves in a

perpendicular plane to the cam shaft.
This type of cam is widely used due to its
simplicity.

3.Sperial cams.

In
this
cam,
a
sperial groove is
created in disc. This
slot consist gear
teeth. The follower
end also mesh with
the teeth of sperical
groove gear teeth.

4.Cylindrical cams.

In cylindrical cams, the follower

reciprocates or oscillates in a
direction parallel to the cams axis.

5.Conjugate cams.

Two cylindrical disc

are fixed with some
eccentricity and two
arm roller follower
are in contact with
two different phase
periphery.
This cam is better
contact
at
high
speed, low wear &
noise etc.

6.Globoidal cams.

Two types of this cams according to

surface:

Concave
Convex

This type of cam is used where large

oscillation angle required.

7.Sperical cams.

Rise-Return.
Dwell-Rise-Return-Dwell.
Dwell-Rise-Dwell-Return-Dwell.

Preloaded spring cam.

Positive drive cam.

A compression type of spring is used to maintained

contact between cam surface and follower tips.
In this of cam a special groove is generated in which
a cam end oscillate or slide. The follower movement
is limited and depends on the groove of the cam.

Gravity cam.

In this type of cam-follower mechanism, contact

between cam and follower is maintained. The
intensity of contact is depend upon the weight of
follower.
