BDA Design Note 3INTRODUCTION
In the production of design and construction
drawings in brickwork, the designer must think
Bricks and minimise cutting by using brick
dimensions where possible. An awareness that the
architect understands the craftsman’s problems,
such as, unnecessary time consuming and costly
cutting, encourages interest in the job and a better
result.
Brickwork dimensions tables are an aid to
architects and designers in the preparation of,
design and construction drawings.
USING THE TABLES
(see PRINCIPLES, page 5)
Step 1. Establish the appropriate condition
determined by the first or last brick {joint condition
when all the other brick /joints are CO
(co-ordinating size) in the pier or panel of
brickwork being considered.
Step 2. Select the correct CO+, CO, CO— column
inthe tables
Step 3. Read the brickwork dimension, beside the
number of bricks required (or known approximate
dimension) of the pier or brick panel being
considered.

BDA Design Notes jiPRINCIPLES OF THE TABLES,
Based upon British Standard Bricks with
co-ordinating sizes of 225 « 112.5 « 75 which
includes 10 mm joints
All brickwork dimensions are determined by one Of
three alternative conditions:
Brick + 2 joints
ie door and win-
Bi dow openings
Brick + 1joint ie brick panel
(B+) with opposite
(215~10=225) return ends
Brick only (Brick Te brick piers
B ) work size) or panels
(sy between openings
Let
B+ 23-CO+d (brick co-ordinating
size+joint) =co
B_ — =CO—d (brick co-ordinating
size—joint) =co—
‘There are only three conditions to remember, CO +,
CO, and CO—. Every brickwork dimension can be
determined by one of these three conditions:
nx CO+,n» CO and n» CO— (n—number of bricks,
in the pier or panel),
It can be seen from the diagram, for example;
All openings in brickwork aren» CO+ dimension
All brickwork panels with opposite return ends are
rn CO dimension
Al brick piers or panels between openings are
nx CO
When the bricks to be used in piers or small width
panels of up to about 4 bricks are all either above or
below work size, adjustment of the pier or brick
panel width should be considered to avoid
unusually large or small width perpend joints.
Itis helpful to the site to indicate on construction
drawings the number of bricks which make up the
dimension.
Vertical brickwork courses dimensions tables
are also provided, setting out CO (co-ordinating
size) values. CO-+ and CO— values can easily be
determined.
