Create a Toy: Sensory Board

NAEYC Standard 1.b: Promoting Child Development and Learning: Knowing and
Understanding the multiple influences on early development & learning.
ECE Outcome 1: Apply child development theory to practice.

The sensory board was created for all ages from infants to preschool. As for infants the sensory
board is used for infants doing tummy time. The infant will try and reach the gel, mirror,
sandpaper, colored pom pom balls, the picture of a family and bells. Older infants can crawl to
the sensory board and the sensory board could also be mounted on the wall so the older infant
could stand up to do sensory. Older children can use the sensory board for the touch area for the
five senses theme unit. The materials that were used were a large piece of cardboard, ziplock
plastic baggies, colored masking tape, hair gel, bells, pom pom balls, a plastic mirror, sandpaper,
and a family photo.
I learned that the sensory board is not limited to the younger and older infants. The sensory board
can be used for all ages. Children love to touch, fell, and explore through textures. By having a
sensory board at the center the teachers will have another tool to use when they are doing the 5
senses unit for their class to explore through touch.
