Homework 6
1. Consider the 802.11 WLAN standards.
(a) What are the three topological configurations offered in the standard?
(b) What is the hidden terminal problem and how is it solved in the IEEE 802.11
standard?
(c) What is PCF in 802.11, what services does it provide and how is it
implemented?
(d) What is the difference between an ESS and a BSS in the IEEE 802.11?
(e) What is the difference between a probe and a beacon signal in 802.11?
(f) Name 3 devices which can interfere with WLANs in the 2.4Ghz band? Which
band does 802.11a use that can potentially avoid some of these interference
issues?
(g) Why is no backoff used within PCF? What protects PCF contention free
periods from collisions from other stations?
2. Consider a WLAN AP that operates at 100mW in the 2.4 GHz band on the ceiling
of 8th floor of a office building. Using the JTC model determine if the WLAN
can be accessed 1 meter off the floor on the 4th floor of the building while
directly beneath the AP. Each floor is 3 meters distance and the WLAN access
card requires 80dBm signal strength. Use the JTC path loss model from earlier
lectures.
3. Consider the IEEE 802.15 standards for WPANs.
a. Why is using unlicensed spectrum important for WPANs?
b. What is the hopping rate in Bluetooth and how many bits are transmitted in
one slot transmission?
c. Which 802.11 LAN standards will Bluetooth interfere with?
d. How many slaves does a Bluetooth network allow in active mode? How many
in parked mode?
e. What is the difference between a page and inquiry?
f. In Bluetooth determine how often packets have to be sent to support circuit
switched voice at 64 kbps in each direction.
g. What is the rationale for a lower speed/lower power WPAN standard such as
IEEE 802.15.4
4. What WPAN technology would you use to support the following applications?
a. High data-rate video streaming between your DVD player and your TV?
b. Mobile phone connected to headset and PC.
c. Game console (XBOX, Wii etc.) connected to game controller /remote /
joystick
