Page: 410

James R. Wallbaum
Date: 1/29/14
Time Required: 40 mins

Standards:
12.D.2b Demonstrate and explain ways that forces cause actions and
reactions (e.g., magnets attracting and repelling; objects falling, rolling and
bouncing).
Measurable Educational Learning Objectives:

The students will understand how forces such as gravity, electricity, and
magnetism affect motion.

Assessment:
Check for understanding questions
Adaptations and Accommodations:
none
Resources:
Science book, Lesson 1 review worksheet, projector, youtube video, white
board
Prerequisite Skills:
Understanding concepts of motion
Academic Language:
Gravity, Magnetism, Force
Anticipatory Set:
Review Lesson 13-1 How can you describe motion?
Statement of Objective or Purpose:
Today we will look at forces such as gravity, magnetism, and electricity, and
the way they affect motion.
Sequence of Activities:

Review Lesson 13-1

Grade Lesson 1 worksheet as a class

Introduce forces
Read pages 410-413 aloud,
Pause while reading to ask questions and check for understanding
Watch video on magnetism and the worlds fastest train

Questions to ask:

What does it take to make an object move?

What is magnitude?
Why does your weight vary depending on the gravitational pull of a
planet?

Conclusion and Summary:

Today we learned about forces, and looked at several forces that are at work
in the world around us. Magnetism, gravity, and electricity all affect motion
in different ways.
Self Evaluation and Reflection:
This lesson did not go as well as I hoped it would. The children were very
chatty, and I struggled to keep the class focused. I also did not feel as
confident in explaining some of the questions I received. If I taught this
lesson again, I would make sure to do more background reading as the
subject was not one of my personal strengths. In addition, I would have
asserted myself more in order to set the tone for learning.
