Observation/Assessment: Why did you choose this activity/experience?

(Identify needs, interests, abilities of children)
The children are all able to run but some have a hard time jumping with both feet leaving the ground.

Vocabulary Words:
Hop
Fly
Slither
Swim
MSDE Standards Developmental Goals:
1. Perform more complex movements with his arms and legs
2. Use improved eye-hand coordination to explore and manipulate objects

Learning Objectives (2 or more):

1. The children will be able to walk along the balance beam with minimal assitance
2. The children will be able to use their feet to coordinate walking so they do not fall
down.
3. The children will be able to mimic the teacher and move as she does using their
gross motor skills.

Materials:
Circular pads to jump to.

Procedure:
I will read Who Hops? By Katie Davis. After reading the book we will go outside and
pretend that we are animals that hop, fly, slithers, and swims.

Extension Activity:
I will extend this activity by letting the children show me some different gross motor
movements to do. This will let them lead, instead of me.

1.

Introduction/Motivation/Set Induction: How will you get the childrens

attention?

I will get the children motivated by hopping like a rabbit or a frog. They will want to join
in with me. I will then tell them to come sit down with me to read a book about some
animals that move just like we did.

2.

Nurturing/Teaching Strategies Procedures: What are the steps you will take to
conduct this activity/experience?
Some steps I will take to conduct this activity is to encourage the children to keep
trying, even if they cannot perform one of the activities I have asked them to try.
This will encourage positive self-esteem and make for a happier child.

3.

Closure: How will you know its time to end your activity?

I will end the activity with the children helping me clean up the circular pads. After we
have cleaned up the children will be able to have free play outside.

4.

Transition: How will you prepare the children psychologically or physically for
what will occur next?

I will let the children know that we have one minute to clean up if I see that the children
are starting to lose interest. After the one minute I will sing the clean-up song to increase
their self-help skills.

5.

Developmental Variations: What modifications will you make for an

individual(s) or group(s)?

Some modifications that I could make are to have the children hop on one foot if they are
very good at hopping on two. I also could have the child that is working on hopping or
jumping hold my hand for support as their balance is probably off.

Observers Comment/Suggestions ( Please sign and date):

Self Evaluation:

Do you feel you were sufficiently prepared for the activity?

I do feel I was sufficiently prepared for this activity. Not all children participated but it is
expected at this age.
How did the children engage/respond to the activity?
The children engaged to the activity pretty well. They tried to hop and slither like a snake
and also flapped their arms like a bird.

Do you feel this activity was developmentally-appropriate for the children?

I do. This activity helped the children increase their gross motor development and it was
simple enough that the children could follow the directions given.

Were the goals/objectives met?

The goals and objectives were met. The children were able to walk on the blance beam,
hop on one or both feet, and use their eye hand coordination to balance as well.
Is there anything you might change if you plan this activity again?
I may change the way we do the lesson with reading the book after the physical activity.
The children will understand wha each word means more if it is done in front of them.

How might you use other domain areas to expand on this activity and meet additional
goals?
I could expand this activity by having the children work together by holing hands and
hoping on one foot. This would build social skills with all the children. I could also
expand on this by having the children hop onto the picture of the animals that hop or fly
to the animal that flies, which would be using the language and literacy domain.
